In three games with the Marlies, Byron Froese has 2 goals and 2 assists and at least a point in all three games. Great stuff for him ( awful for us). Doubt we will see him back and if he does return here from Toronto I doubt it will be for long

Just because he has four points in three games doesn't mean he's gone. That doesn't necessarily mean he played well in those three games. What you can't see by looking at the stats is how many battles he won for pucks, how many turnovers he had, his play away from the puck, and his play in the defensive zone. A lot of players in the ECHL can score goals and put up points in the AHL (and AHL players in the NHL), but they're not good enough in the essential parts of the game to stay at the next level. To stay in the AHL, he'll have to do more than accrue points.
An example of how many points someone has isn't an indication of how well they might be playing is Luke Glendening of the Detroit Red Wings. If you look at his stats (3 goals, 1 assist in 32 games), you might think he wasn't playing that well or wasn't an important player for Detroit. However, when you watch him play you see how valuable he is to the Red Wings. He wins faceoffs, he's good on the penalty kill, he wins battles for the puck, and the puck is in the offensive zone most of the time when he's on the ice, usually below the goal line and where he keeps it moving along the wall, which over the course of a game wears down the other team's defensemen, creating an advantage for the team's skill guys later in the game. Detroit has several players in the AHL that can produce more points than Glendening, but they can't do the things that he does that win hockey games.

With those kind of numbers there's a good chance Toronto hangs onto hime for the duration of his PTO just to make sure no one else signs him. As you alluded to DBC, even if he does get released back to us, it will only be a matter of time before someone else comes calling. |
