It's sad to see that our hometown media can't write a story like this

PRO HOCKEY
CYCLONES: Cincinnati rookie David Desharnais begins the week
with a 26-game points streak, which is the fourth-longest
streak in ECHL history.
Desharnais leads the ECHL with 78 points and is tied for the
lead with 58 assists in 53 games. He has broken the team record
of 75 points by Sheldon Gorski in 1997-98 and Matt Noga in
2002-03 and the club mark of 51 assists by Noga in 2002-03.
He will have an opportunity to extend the streak Wednesday
when the Cyclones host Wheeling.
The streak includes 20 consecutive games with an assist
from Jan. 5-Feb. 9 breaking the ECHL record of 17 games
by Peter Kasowski of Roanoke Valley from Oct. 26-Dec. 7, 1991.

Desharnais has been a treat to watch this season. His playmaking ability is other wordly. He has been strong defensively from the git go.
I had an opportunity to see him play in Grand Rapids when he had his 4 game stint with Hamilton earlier this season. I saw Jimmy Bonneau score an AHL goal in that game. Some people have seen Haley's Comet. I witnessed something far more rare!
The Bulldogs were mired in a deep slump at the time. Desharnais did not look out of place on the ice. When he gets his AHL shot next season, I have high hopes for him. I don't know if Weber's Martin St. Louis comparison is entirely accurate, but it is a fact that most by-the-book scouting and personell types are highly skeptical of small players. They're the ones who draft the Zultek's and Smirnov's and end up with big time busts.
Desharnais 'sees' the game. It is something that cannot be taught and has allowed him to be a top scorer in the QMJHL and now the ECHL. He will prove the naysayers wrong again next season.
Also, it's so much more enjoyable watching a Desharnais or a Daoust perform than some lumbering defensive role-playing forward. Watching Desharnais play is worth the price of admission in it of itself.

| Martin St. Louis is a much better skater than Desharnais. He's both faster and stronger. I think the guy you compare him to is former Cincinnati Mighty Duck Keith Aucoin, who is now playing in the National Hockey League for the Carolina Hurricanes. Because of the team's system when he was with the Ducks, the fans here never really got a chance to see how talented and skilled Aucoin is. They're both terrific playmakers and make the players they play with better. Aucoin was arguably the best player in the American Hockey League last year (99 points in less than 70 games with Albany) and over the past six weeks is finally getting a shot to play regularly in the NHL. Like Desharnais, he began his career at the lower levels of professional hockey and had the same knocks about his size. In fact, Aucoin couldn't get any Division I or Division II colleges interested in him, playing Division III at Norwich where he set all kinds of school records. Aucoin put up points in the AHL with Providence, Lowell and Albany, but it wasn't until he learned the defensive part of the game that he was given a chance to play in the NHL. If Desharnais can become a reliable player defensively it will help his chances to play full time in the AHL, and if he's doing that, as Aucoin has shown, the NHL is in the realm of possibility. |

Aucoin was a great playmaker in his lone year with the Ducks. It looks like he's finally getting a legitimate NHL chance with Carolina. Wish him the best.
I've always been impressed with Desharnais' defensive work. Even though he plays deep in the offensive zone, he rarely misses his defensive assignment. It happens upon occassion, but that's the norm with centers who play as deep in the off. zone as he does. I would think that his offensive numbers more than compensate getting caught too deep in the def. zone every so often. Alot of the time, he's picking up one of his wingers' assignments.
