Tonight coming home from work (after 3:30PM) I thought I would turn on 1530 to listen to
Lance McCallister and his take on the championship.What I got made me want to go postal
on someone.It seems if twenty people called with positive comments or twenty emails were
sent with positive words,they were put on hold until he could play the one negative call
or read the one negative email.At 4:15 pm, he decided the Cyclones had gotten enough
coverage and he would go back to Reds and Bengals talk.When the Ducks were in town,the
Cyclones in his words should leave because they were hurting the Ducks chance of making
a go of it.Please,don't read that wrong,I wasn't a Duck lover but what I'm saying is
he chose them and bashed us. Now he comes down,talks with the coaches and players and
acts like he is our big supporter.The only media in town that can claim to always be at
our side is Wildman Walker.Hey Lance,go back to talking about the Bengals now,I'm sure
they have important news happening.Go back to talking about the Reds, you know the
playoffs are right around the corner.All I asked is one or two days to make us the center
of your program.I guess 12,000 fans are nothing. |

McCallister has been a very good supporter of the Clones. I believe that he's had 2 outings to games and he has given the team a fair amount of coverage.
The sports media plays to what is 'hot'. Collectively, the print/radio/TV media has jumped on the bandwagon and given the Cyclones amazing coverage. My mother, who doesn't really follow sports, has known which team the Cyclones have been playing and that they've been drawing big crowds. Through the TV and paper, not me.
Our season is over. Now it's back to regular coverage. Hopefully, the collective media will remember the enthusiasm and popularity that the Cyclones run this post season brought when the team opens camp in October. That will matter alot more than a few extra snippets of coverage after it was all said and done.
The 'bandwagonners' in the media are probably responsible for well over half the attendance that the team had during the playoffs. Let them jump off now if they choose.

| When his son was sick the Ducks would give him free tickets, jerseys, sticks, pucks, etc etc. That is why he was such a Ducks "supporter". |

It's annoying that the Enquirer and the local TV stations didn't pay attention at all to the Cyclones until the conference finals or so, but just look at that crowd last night. That's the direct result of the Cyclones being on the front page of the sports section for the last week and a half (though I was kind of sad to see that we didn't merit a giant headline on the front page this morning). Some letters and emails to the various media outlets might help to lead to a touch more coverage for the team next year.
And hopefully a lot of those people who came out will be back for a game or two next season. |

Last time I checked the Mighty Ducks were all in Des Moines, Iowa... Despite every single promise by that team to stay in Cincinnati LOL.... The GOOD LORD wanted the RailRaiders and Ducks to fail so we can get the Kelly Cup! |

If I'm a loser for supporting a team and an organization that is made up of a number of classy individuals who don't get in trouble, play for the love of the game and don't have huge egos, and, above all has just completed one of, if not the most sucessful seasons of any team at their same level competition, then I guess I'll just have to be a loser then.

| AMEN JK! Last time I checked, NONE of our 2008 KELLY CUP CHAMPION CINCINNATI CYCLONES were ever on the news getting busted for breaking the law! If that makes them losers, then all I have to tell the idiots who think otherwise is simply this: Have a look at that big silver hunk of metal they call the KELLY CUP and look where it's residing right now! THEN get back to me about us being losers! |

I just don't get why people are so worked up over us supporting the Cyclones... I mean, I understand that they are a minor league team. So what? If you don't like minor league hockey, then don't watch it. But don't bash me for supporting a group of guys skating their asses off because they love hockey.
And I'm not really sure if these people can really call themselves hockey fans. If you're so concerned with the nameplate of ECHL versus AHL or NHL then maybe you just don't love hockey the way we do. I understand that ECHL is a lower level of hockey. It's slower, it's a bit sloppier, but hell, that's what it's for. It's for these guys to start out in. It's for them to get experience and prove themselves so they can move up and continue playing hockey.
We don't have a "major league" hockey team in Cincinnati. But we do have a PROFESSIONAL hockey team in Cincinnati. I support the Cyclones because I love hockey and because they love hockey. Everyone that thinks I'm a loser for loving the Cyclones can just take a long walk off a short pier.  |

Cincinnati is a seasonal sports town. When the Reds are playing, that's what we get. In August when the Reds have been eliminated from post-season play, we get the Bengals. In December when the Bengals have been eliminated from post-season play, we get college basketball. Sometime in March when college basketball is over, it's time for the Reds again.
The Cyclones have been full of awesome all season, but the only people that knew it were going to the games and following the hockey news. The local media started reporting during the conference finals...when no other sports news was worth reporting (Reds losing, Junior can't hit 600, too early for real Bengals news, etc). And just two days after the Kelly Cup win, stories about it were easy to find on just two of the five main Cincinnati news media websites (Enquirer and WCPO). And you can bet that there won't be any coverage for 08-09 opening night.
We shouldn't be so quick to bash the media for ignoring the Cyclones...there's only so much sports they can report about between weather updates. |

| Someone on LOT D posted about the Cyclones winning, nobody cares, go away, and let the AHL come back. I responded to shut his trap, enjoy the win and thanks for trying to reignite the Hockey wars. I told him to go to Hecklers grove if he wanted to talk that smack and since then, I have yet to find the post. I think the guys name was William (on that board). It must have been erased. :( |

| He isn't use to talking about a Winning team in Cincinnati since the Reds won it in 1990 and the Bengals making the playoffs. So he doesn't know how to take a Championship team.. it's okay.. More people want to know about the negative instead of the positive, Sort of like the News. 10 second clip of Cyclones and a 2 minutes clip about some guy getting shot in Cincinnati. |

Congrats
I'm happy for the Cyclones. What a cool night it must have been. We were at dinner after Peyton's recital and I got a call from a friend at the game, amazed at the crowd. A few minutes later I got a text from a member of the organization with a scoring update and prediction of 12-13,000 in the house.
I'm happy for the diehard fans.....the ones that hung with this team over the years.....the fans that traveled to Trenton, Elmira and Wheeling during the season. The fans that must have looked around at the crowd last night and said, "this is what we've been waiting for".
I'm happy for Chuck Weber, a rising star coach, who did everything from book hotels and flights to maneuver around 20+ player call-ups during the year. I'm happy for the players, from the young guns like David Desharnais to the veteran hometown kid Jason Deitsch.
I'm happy for Media Relations Director/radio voice John Hammel after all the time and effort put in. I'm happy for Wild Man Walker who lived and died with that franchise more than anyone. I'm happy for the vendors who sold beer and dogs with 800 fans in the house and then 12,000+ in the house. I'm happy for an organization that's been reincarnated multiple times since 1990....a franchise that had it's day in the 90's ....got into a hockey war...went away ....and came back.
Well done.
As the Clones got better and better and the crowds grew and grew during the season, I made a show investment in the Clones. I tried to reflect the increased interest. I talked with Coach Chuck Weber 11 times during the year, I had players Jason Deitsch and Jean Michele Daoust on the show. I put together Homer Outings to the games. It was fun to be a part of it in a small way. My family attended nine games this season and we had a blast. We'll be back next year.

Gee Lance,then why couldn't you be happy on Friday afternoon and
just step up and say "The Cyclones and their fans deserve to talk
about their team today and if you aren't a hockey fan,we will be back
to the Reds and Bengals on Monday" Instead you have to say that you
have to get back to the Reds and Bengals because we have talked long
enough on them. I hope you do become a fan and I hope if other small
teams in the area win,you give them the courtesy of covering their
glory.We don't expect headline news during the season,but a little
coverage would be nice. |
