I read a lot under both topics and want to combine them here to fully relate how they effect one another. (in my opinion)
We diehards have been screaming/asking/begging/praying for more coverage of our Beloved CYCLONES. We all know we had one hell of a team this year and that they were going to go far! AND THEY DID!! Winning it ALL!!! The media reported in slowly as the playoffs began and increased to nearly daily reads in the paper and in TV as the CYCLONES progressed into the next rounds. As went the coverage, so was the interest in this team called the CINCINNATI CYCLONES. We still may not like some of the coverage given and what is said and printed......but it was/is coverage!! And so as the media finally began to recognize and report on what was happening, more bandwagoners came to know about this team.
Coverage = attendace! There is no other truth to this! great coverage = good attendence poor coverage = poor attendence positive coverage = good attendence negative coverage = poor attendence
Bandwagon fans can be both a blessing and a curse! Throwing things on the ice and their foolish behavior is something we diehard fans do NOT want to see. They do not fully understand the game but in some respects, most times they are willing to learn about this 'new sport' they are coming to see (maybe) for the first time. Even if 10% or less come back next season, that can be close to a 1,000 new fans and/or season ticket holders. And these new fans will bring others that just mgith become new fans. The most frequent comment I heard during these playoffs is that they did not realize/know how much more exciting a hockey game was to watch in person (rather than on TV). So, suffice to say..........I hope we see a lot more of these 'banwagoners' next October and the CYCLONES and we diehards can turn them into real fans of the game!
(Sorry to be so long winded..........but felt it needed to be said all in one post! ) |

There's another side to this discussion that most hockey fans don't understand. Media outlets are looking for stories that their "customers" will care about. While media coverage helps drive attendance, attendance also drives media coverage. 1,000-2,000 people watching a minor league hockey game is a non-event in a city the size of Cincy. A team driving towards a championship matters in any size city.
Now that the Clones have the attention of Cincinnati, hopefully they'll be able to hold the focus. If good crowds show up, the press will cover it, which will help make the crowds better, which will demand even more attention from the press..... and so on, and so on. We won't even talk about the spiral in the other direction, because hopefully you won't have to deal with that one again.
Congratulations again on your Championship, and the re-awakening of hockey in Cincy. Enjoy the moments.

Hockey fans DO UNDERSTAND! Why do you think we tried so hard to get better coverage?? How can the media "customers" care about 'something' if they don't even know such exsists?? How many times have we all heard someone say "I thought the Cyclones were gone!" And this I heard numerous times during this seasons' playoffs!!
IT IS a double edge sword......... but hopefully Cincinnati now know Hockey still exsists in Cincinnati and they go by the name of THE CINCINNATI CYCLONES......the 2008 KELLY CUP CHAMPIONS!!! |

| I think it's sad that Ken Broo was a the Celebration(Band wagoning). I believe he was not a fan until the Playoffs. GO CLONES SEE YOU NEXT YEAR |
