While the NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA, and even the WWE have all seen their professional athletes and entertainers appear on Nintendo's Wii, there is at least one three-letter acronym in the world of sports that has yet to be converted for use with the motion-sensing Wii Remote. 2K Sports today announced that it will bring "the first and only" NHL- and NHLPA-licensed game to the Wii with NHL 2K9.

Already announced for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2, NHL 2K9 will retain the full feature set of those versions, while adding motion-sensitive controls. 2K Sports has said that players will be able to use the Wii Remote as a virtual hockey stick to mimic a variety of actions, including face-offs and slap shots.

To mark the occasion of the NHL arriving on Nintendo's latest system, Mario will make an appearance on the red carpet at tonight's awards for the 2008 NHL season. The mustachioed plumber is no stranger to hockey fans, as his "Super Mario" moniker has long been the nickname of Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux.

All four versions of the game are being developed by Visual Concepts, and will see release in the fall.

Ok the title may be a tad misleading but... hey now you can swing your controller like a hockey stick! Now you can feel like your on the ice as one of the Clones...

It's about freakin' time. Just what I need another reason to never leave my Wii console.

make it the first reason for me to hold on to the Nintendo Wii and NOT trade it in... I was considering it but now, I just might hold on to it for a little longer. There aren't enough games on the wii that are keeping my interest.

i have one. what kinda games do you prefer? i'm buying this game for two reasons the cyclones and the ability to swing the stick like playing. i'm gonna try and find one of those lame add ons to the controller that look like the sports tool your using. hopefully i can find a hockey stick for it. i'll wear my jersey and then my gf will roll her eyes.

I remember a couple of years ago on one of the Hockey games I played for some game system? I was actually able to play prospects.....In fact I think I played Erik Cole on a line. I'm certain that one of the NHL games I played actually has lists and stats for hundreds of players including prospects so it's not that unrealistic to play a Clone player prospect of Nashville or the Habs. Not certain if this game will have that ability but I have played some Clones on my lines, In fact I also had Shane Willis on a Line as well
