The American Hockey League Board of Governors has approved the relocation of the AHL franchise owned by the Edmonton Oilers from Edmonton, Alta., to Oklahoma City, Okla., to begin play there in the fall of 2010. The yet-to-be-named Oklahoma City club will serve as the Oilers' primary development team.

| OKC was usually at the top of all minor league hockey when they were in the CHL. Now they have a NBA time I have no idea how they will draw. |

The last version of the Oklahoma City Blazers played in the Central Hockey League from 1992-2009. From 1992-2002,they played in a building that was known as The Myriad, now called the Cox Convention Center, with a hockey seating capacity of 13,399. The team moved into the brand new Ford Center in the fall of 2002, with a hockey seating capacity of 18,036.
The team was extremely successful at the gate.
From Pointstreak, the Blazers' attendance numbers since moving into Ford Center:
Year Per Game Avg '02-'03 8988 '03-'04 8763 '04-'05 8245 '05-'06 8609 '06-'07 8902 '07-'08 8713 '08-'09 6508
The Blazers led the league every year during this stretch, as well as some previous years at the Myriad. They ceased operations on July 2, 2009, after failing to reach a lease agreement with the city.
Funny story from my experience in Oklahoma City in 1999 or 2000 (can't remember the exact year)....a couple of friends and I went on a hockey trip to see the Blazers, but didn't know the name of the arena when we got to the city. When we checked into our hotel, we asked the lady behind the desk where the hockey team played, and we thought she said "Oh you mean that team that plays at the Mariott". We just laughed it off as a woman who doesn't know sports. But when we got to our room, we looked it up in the yellow pages, and when we saw the name of the arena, "The Myriad", we then realized that the woman knew what she was talking about, but her southern accent made Myriad sound like Marriott. |

| I have a buddy currently stationed out in OKC. He attended his first NBA game a couple weeks ago and said he had a great time, his biggest problem with it though was the price of tickets. He's not the biggest hockey fan but would come with me to clones and ducks games on occasion when he lived here. He's pretty excited about the OKC AHL team and says they've been all over the media with their name the team contest and other stuff. Hopefully they'll be seen as an affordable sporting event to attend and draw pretty well. |
