Alex Ovechkin (Russia) knocking Jaromir Jagr (Czech Republic) on his ass at center ice, leading to a 2-on-1 and a Malkin goal.
Shea Weber (Canada) scoring a goal THROUGH the back of the net against Germany, with NOT A STRAND OF NET TORN!!!!! I have NEVER seen that before. Skid marks on the net, but no hole. I didn't even know that was possible.
US vs. Switzerland...Jonas Hiller (Switzerland) bats the puck up off his shoulder and into the net, but just a SPLIT second after the clock expired in the 2nd period to preserve a scoreless tie after 40 minutes of play. The replay showed the puck hovering right on top of the goal line as the clock hit 0.0. Of course the US went on to beat Hiller once in the 3rd, and add an empty netter for the 2-0 win.
US vs. Canada for the Gold. |

They've really caught fire since Babcock put Brendan Morrow on their line in place of Eric Staal. |

I'm not really interested in them demonstrating greatness today, in fact lack-luster is the word I want to use.....GO USA |

@ HockeyTraveller
I have to agree with your picks. Shae Weber putting the puck THROUGH the back of the net was just...well I'm not sure I have words for it.
The hit Ovechkin put on Jagr was just what you'd expect from him. I think when Jagr got he thought he was back in Prague. Too bad he, and the rest of the Russian team came out softer than a wet rag against Canada. |

I got to thinking about this, and talking to a buddy (yes, I do have a friend lol), and when you think about all the people in the world who aren't what we would consider "true" hockey fans, and only watch for the fights, that hit and the 2-on-1 it sprung is more of what hockey is about than two goons dropping their gloves and pounding noogies on each other's heads.
Fighting is there, it's part of the game, and I agree that it should be part of the game. But I usually don't care much for them, and I think the Ovechkin hit and resulting goal was just a thing of BEAUTY. I know I'm making a huge deal about it, but I just can't say it enough, that play was just really what hockey is all about.
And Elvis, I agree, I was (and still am) kinda lost for words about the Weber shot. It's almost like it defied the laws of physics. |
