CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones best of five series in the American Conference Quarterfinals is even at a game apiece with the South Carolina Stingrays, following a 3-1 loss on Wednesday night. Matt Scherer had a goal and an assist to lead South Carolina. It was the Stingrays first win at U.S. Bank Arena in four tries between the regular season and playoffs in 2009-10.

South Carolina, which posted a 41-19-12 regular season recordtied for the South Division and American Conference titles, is meeting the Cyclones (44-25-3second in the North Division) in the Kelly Cup playoffs for the third straight year. In 2008, Cincinnati knocked off the Stingrays in a five-game conference championship series en route to taking the Kelly Cup. Last year, the Stingrays swept the Cyclones in the conference finals to capture their third league title. South Carolina is the fourth-seeded team, while Cincinnati is the fifth-seed.

South Carolina scored both first period goals to build a 2-0 lead. Former Cyclone Rob Ricci had his first goal of the postseason with a wraparound from behind the net just inside the left post at 33 seconds. Matt Scherer had the assist. Scherer would get his first of the playoffs with a shot through a screen on the right wing side at 5:29. Johann Kroll had the assist on the tally. Late in the period, the Cyclones nearly respondedbut Hans Benson's shot banged off the goal post. The shots favored South Carolina, 8-6, in the frame.

The Stingrays increased the lead to 3-0 at 6:20 of the second period, as Keith Johnson potted his first of the playoffs from Dylan Yeo and Kroll on the power play. The Cyclones would respond with a man-advantage marker of their own at 11:44. Jimmy Kilpatrick rocketed a shot just inside the left goal post for his third lamplighter of the postseason from Mathieu Aubin and Doug Krantz. The shots again went the way of the Stingrays, 13-10.

There was no scoring in the third period, as the shots were even at ten each. For the game, the Stingrays won the shots battle, 31-26.

Todd Ford collected the win for South Carolina with a 25 save performance. Jeremy Smith suffered the defeat for Cincinnati with a 28 save effort. The Cyclones went one-for-seven on the power play, while South Carolina went one-for-five with the man-advantage.

The winner of this series will play the winner of top-seeded Charlotte and eighth-seeded Toledo. That series is even at one game each, after a 6-1 win for Charlotte this evening.

The next game of the Cincinnati Cyclones USA Collision Centers postseason will be the third game of this best of five series, played at North Charleston Coliseum on Friday night (April 9) at 7pm. The game will be carried on the internet at www.cycloneshockey.com and broadcast on ESPN 1530.

Tickets for the 2010-11 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. A special open house on Tuesday, April 13 from 4-8pm will allow fans a chance to see the facility up close and even skate on the ice. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. All road Kelly Cup playoff games will be carried on ESPN 1530 and on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com.

They should've pulled McKenzie and given Twister a stick.

For whatever reason the guys came out flat and never got on track. After giving up the first goal in the first minute I expected the Cyclones to explode offensively like they did last night and absolutely nothing happened.

I didn't think SC played overly physical we just didn't perform to the best of our ability. (Especially just trying to get the puck in the offensive zone in the later half of the third)

Lastly, while they didn't cost us the game, I thought the officiating was poor. Call the game any which way you want but be consistant. If its a hook or holding the stick just call it, or don't call it , just call it for both sides and the same in the first, second AND third periods. The linesmen weren't immune either as they waved a few icings off for no apparent reason and had a few issues with offsides.

Not all is lost as we have proved we can win in Charleston. We have to win two games, but so do they. Looking at the Kelly Cup standings everyone is 1-1 (Well, still waiting on Utah/LV) so everyone is pretty much in the same boat. Lets toss this clunker out and play some Cyclones hockey this weekend.

The officiating was the worst of the year. The good guys got outplayed and likely would have lost anyway, but the guys in stripes didn't help.

The only thing worse was the attendance. That was embarrassing.

The "Star of the Game" was the officials. I guess Barret Ehgoetz must
be fair game for every SC player to punch-slash-trip when ever they
felt like. But let him push a player blocking him from getting on his
OWN bench and he gets a roughing penalty. Spencer Carbery (7) has become
the biggest jerk on the ice for SC. From his after first game fight to
all the cheap shots last night, he deserves what ever he gets.
Jeremy Smith deserved better last night. I was impressed he didn't
have a Nie melt down on the cheap goal he allowed 30 seconds in. He
stepped up and played a great game. Thanks officials for not giving us
the goal we scored in the first. We sit right in line with the goal
line and it went clearly over before Ford pulled it back.
We now have a mountain to climb. 5 on 5 we have a chance. 8 on 5 and
this series is over. "let them play" only works if both teams are
playing the same way.

First, we've been to Tues& Wed's games and the attendence last night seemed smaller than Tues, but the score sheet showed a higher number last night.(Very sad for playoff games)
Second, In my opinion it seems like when the boys hand out a beating, like Tues and the fan appreciation game against Johnstown, just to mention the most recent, the next game seems to be a melt down.

We could clearly see the waived off goal as well. It was in.

But that one wasn't the ref's fault. He was behind the rush and couldn't see it. I think the goal judge was taking a nap.

And I agree with the Ehgoetz comment. He got crosschecked multiple times (once in the face), boarded, and generally shoved around and NONE of it got called. But he got sent to the box for nothing.

And McKenzie getting sent to the box because the SC dude got his stick caught in his glove (while hooking him by the way) was one of the silliest ref moves I've seen in a while. Ridiculous.

Thats the first hockey game I can remember where I lost interest and started yawning. Hey, for most of the game it was quiet enough in there to take a nap.

Hate to say it but I sit five rows up behind the east goal and the shot in the first period was not in and all around me agreed. Also heard rumblings about Benson's shot but it hit off the post.

Also thought the refereeing was fairly good. I like the fact they are letting heavy body contact go against the puck carrier but not the stick. Body checking is allowed from the front, side and back as long as the stick or elbow is not involved. Body checking is not allowed against anyone else. Thought he called a fair game. Its the playoffs--let them play.

SC did a great job of forechecking and keeping us bottled up in our own end. Numerous times it took 3-4 tries to get out and then all we could do was chip it in and change lines.
Part of it was the ice though which was the worst of the year. You could see the puck bouncing all night and it seemed like the puck was on edge for half the evening.

See you next week against either Charlotte or Toledo.

Bottom line is that SC showed up to play and the cyclones just weren't ready. i dont know how you don't show up ready for a playoff game, but that's what happened last night (imo).

i understand that bounces don't always go your way but SC was playin on the same ice and were up against the same officiating inconsistencies. as usual the pp was ineffective and their pp goal on mckenzie's "penalty" was a back breaker.

but tomorrow is a new day and i look for/hope there is a much better effort.

Both goals were correct NO Goals. I sit in section 120 row C
and the 1st one didnt cross the line all the way so no goal. 2nd
one that ppl thought was in hit low post and kick out also good call
by the line judge. I know sometime the line judge falls asleep
but he made the right calls and didnt turn on the light, we just got beat. the team didnt show up. Im so glad the team left after the
game last night so they can get to SC get some rest and kick some
stinkray butt on friday and saturday. Lets go Clones I still have faith in you guys. Lets get it done. i want more hockey.

Does anybody know if Sluggers will be showing the games this weekend? If so, who is going to be there?

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Makes me wonder if the team has Eghoetz's back or respect him as their captain. I grew up watching Steve Yzerman, and if he ever got roughed up one of the Red Wings goons would take care of business. Where was Benson or Sproat or anyone else stepping up for their Captain? I know fighting is frowned upon in the playoffs, but you got to "fight back", and show SC we're not stepping down.

What makes some of you folks think the Clones "didn't show up"? They worked their butts off.

On Tuesday, the Rays made too many mental/physical errors when the Clones turned up the physical game. Last night, the Rays handled the pressure a little better, and stayed more to their systems. Ford's play was another major difference IMO.

Both teams play hard and are well coached, but they both have weaknesses. I expect the Clones to continue to force the issue this weekend. How the Rays handle the pressure, will likely decide the series.
