Cyclones Goaltenders Mayer and Smith Named Kelly Cup Playoff MVPs
Date: 05/22/2010
CINCINNATI, Ohio The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, announced this evening that rookie goaltenders Robert Mayer and Jeremy Smith have been named co-winners of the Kelly Cup playoffs 'Most Valuable Player' award. The Cyclones defeated Idaho in five games to win their second Kelly Cup championship in three seasons. Mayer, 20, posted a 6-0-1 record with a 1.54 goals against average, second-best in the playoffs, and a .938 save percentage. Robert was in goal for all four of the Kelly Cup victories and had a record of 19-10-1 during the regular season, with a 2.81 goals against average. Mayer earned four different promotions to either Hamilton (AHL) or Montreal (NHL) during the season. Smith, 21, turned in a 9-7-1 record during the postseason with a 2.67 goals against average, eighth-best in the playoffs, and a .907 save percentage. While Jeremy did not play in the Kelly Cup Finals, his play was instrumental in helping the club get through the opening two rounds with wins over South Carolina and Charlotte. He turned in a 23-15-2 record during the regular season with a 2.63 goals against averagesecond-best in the league. Smith was also the winning goaltender for the American Conference at the All-Star Game in January. They become the second and third Cyclones players to ever win the 'Most Valuable Player' award during the Kelly Cup playoffs. Cedrick Desjardins claimed the honor in 2008. Tickets for the 2010-11 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. That was a class move for the award. Without Smith we don't make the finals and without Mayer we don't win the Cup. Still think Barret Ehgoetz should have gotten it but the co award will more than satisfy me for the award. Not bad for a team with almost no power play, worn out legs through out the playoffs and a team of non NHL quality players (just ask DH) to play their hearts out start to finish. Coach Weber and Stork as always gave us a team of quality people both on and off the ice we all can be proud of. |

Personally, I think the entire team and coaching staff deserve the most valuable player award!
But on a side note, was wondering how often it happens that there are 'co-winners' of the MVP?? |

Saw this in an article on the echl site.
This is the fourth straight year that a goaltender has won the Kelly Cup Most Valuable Player Award as Smith and Mayer join Idaho's Steve Silverthorn (2007), Cincinnati's Cedrick Desjardins (2008) and South Carolina's James Reimer (2009). It is the second time that teammates have shared the award, joining Greenvilles Simon Gamache and Tyrone Garner in 2002.

Very proud of these guys. Truly, the Clones would not have won the Cup without them. Smith almost single-handedly got us through the first 3 rounds with the exception of Game 7 of the Reading series. Mayer took the reins from there and was solid when the team needed it the most. Like a lot of people, my heart said "Give it to Barret" but I don't think you can argue with the Co-MVP selection at all. |

I think it was the only way to go. Eghoetz and Sproat could have been named MVPs, but the goaltending is what got us out of rounds 1 & 2 (Smith) and Mayer was stellar (3 shutouts, 1.54 gaa, 6 wins out of 7 decisions). Without these two, no Kelly Cup-hence the MVP.
Plus, given that Smith got a concussion in game 6 vs. Reading, Mayer knew the entire finals series was on him. That's a heavy burden for any goalie let alone a 20 year old rookie.

I agree 666 but lets not forget that Smith had the same pressure for the first 2.5 series when only the EBUG was there. Both came along way since October. Would be interesting to ask Chuck how he would have used them if both had been healthy and available the entire playoff run. Many were surprised when he came back with Mayer in game 7 against reading but if Smith had a concussion there was really no choice. |

Best MVP selection ever.
Without both of them, no cup. That simple.
