Cyclones Add Another Defenseman, Announce Training Camp Roster
Date: 09/30/2010
CINCINNATI, Ohio The 2010 Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL's Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that they have agreed to terms with rookie defenseman Brad Schroeder for the 2010-11 season. Schroeder is one of seventeen players who will participate in this weekend's Training Camp.
Schroeder, a native of Drake, Saskatchewan, will embark on his first season as a professional. The 6-foot-3 defenseman played four seasons at Princeton University, where he was a mainstay on the Tigers blue line. He logged 106 games during his collegiate career, twice being named to the ECAC All-Academic Team. In 2009-10, Schroeder was the recipient of the Richard E. Vaughan Cup, awarded annually to the varsity player who best exemplifies perseverance and dedication to Princeton Hockey.
"Brad is a guy who could be very good at this level," said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. "He's a big player who is a defensively-minded defenseman coming from a good program. Most importantly, though, hes a great person too."
In addition to the 12 players already agreed to terms with Cincinnati, six free agent players have been invited to participate in camp this weekend. Sam D'Agostino, Ryan Hitchcock, Eric Slais, Mark Van Vliet, Justin Axelson, and Ted Nischan will all try out in hopes of being on the 2010-11 roster when the Cyclones open the season on October 15 at Elmira.
Sam D'Agostino, a six-foot, 200-pound forward, spent three years at the NCAA level with UMass-Amherst and UMass-Lowell. The 24-year-old posted 4 points in 42 career college games. Eric Slais, a Fenton, Missouri native, was a four-year letter winner at Brown University. Prior to college, he was teammates with current Cyclone Kevin Roeder while a member of the USHL's Chicago Steel. The Cyclones have also invited defensemen Ryan Hitchcock and Mark Van Vliet to camp while goaltenders Justin Axelson and Ted Nischan will try out between the pipes.

Anyone see any of the camp so far? Would have to think a couple of these guys are just there to have enough bodies...little disappointing so few there - and yes I understand there are many in AHL camps - but having seen a couple of these guys plays, if they have legit chance to make this lineup out of camp we're not going to be very deep... |

From what I saw on day 1 the guys look ready to play. The team seems bigger than in years past (Eggo's 'bout the smallest guy out there). Everyone (try-outers and veterans too!) was hustling and the speed was impressive. Only one injured player (who will not be named) that I saw but he was skating and taking part in more than half of the drills.
The goaltending is subpar but I believe the guys between the pipes are practice goalies until our send downs get here. No Lee Lansdowne; kinda miss him out there.
If you are going to the preseason game get there early. The bleachers may seat about 100 and unless the teams stay on the ice during intermission the crowd will have to part to allow the teams to go to their locker rooms. There is room for about three deep (standing) behind 1/2 the glass. |

Yeah, figured as much with the goalies. Justin was EMBUG at least once for the visiting team last season, usually up drinking beers with the rest of us. The other kid played very low level minor pro last year (GLHL).
Hitchcock from DIII Marian got pretty good reviews as a stay-at-home defensemen from folks who know that conference (also has Adrian College).
Appears Sloane has good size and spent some time in the A last year and was college team mate of Mark Dekanich: Regular Season Playoffs Season Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM GP G A Pts PIM 2004-05 Chicago Steel USHL 17 0 1 1 12 -- -- -- -- -- 2005-06 Colgate University ECAC 27 4 1 5 16 2006-07 Colgate University ECAC 35 4 5 9 27 2007-08 Colgate University ECAC 32 2 3 5 20 2008-09 Colgate University ECAC 35 0 4 4 37 2008-09 Philadelphia Phantoms AHL 1 0 0 0 2 -- -- -- -- -- 2008-09 Philadelphia Flyers NHL 1 0 0 0 0 -- -- -- -- -- 2009-10 Kalamazoo Wings ECHL 5 0 2 2 4 -- -- -- -- -- 2009-10 Adirondack Phantoms AHL 20 0 1 1 23 -- -- -- -- -- NHL Totals 1 0 0 0 0
Iaquinto was so-so player two seasons I saw him play in the NAHL, don't think he had any DI interest...
