Interesting! Might explain why certain players are in camp.

Ice Bears, Cincinnati reach agreement to share players

With that in mind, Craigen has established a working relationship with the East Coast Hockey League's Cincinnati Cyclones and their first-year coach, Jarrod Skalde.

If the Cyclones need a player, they might look first to Knoxville - and vice versa. The ECHL is a step closer to the NHL than the Southern Professional Hockey League, of which Knoxville is a member.

"It's a great experience for players at this level to be able to go up to Cincinnati," Craigen said. "It's a great recruiting tool for me to tell a 21-year-old guy, 'Hey, we're working with Cincinnati, if it's a goal of yours to move up, this is the best place to be because you're only four hours away and they're looking at us for help when they need players.' "

That, however, can be a double-edged sword.

If the Ice Bears lose a player to Cincinnati, they obviously must replace him. That replacement might come from Cincinnati, or elsewhere.

The Ice Bears are keeping their options open.

"Cincinnati isn't the only place for us to place players and that kind of thing," Murray said. "There might be teams at different levels that are looking for a specific type of player, and if we have that player, they'll call us, and that working relationship will be there as well. Maybe they might only need him for a weekend and we'll pull a guy in and say, 'Hey, you're getting called up for the weekend,' which is always a great thing."

Murray got one of those calls during the 1987-88 season while playing for the Hershey (Pa.) Bears of the American Hockey League. He was called up to the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL for one game.

"It's always a good feeling to be able to get the call, but also to give the call," Murray said.

At least a couple of Ice Bears, Mark Van Vliet and Eric Slais, will be at Cincinnati's tryout camp when it begins Oct. 4, the week before the SPHL teams begin their camps.

Craigen will be at the Cincinnati camp, scouting players in case they're released from the ECHL team and are available to play for the Ice Bears.

"I'm going to get first crack at a lot of their players that are going to be released, and to be able to pitch to them that Knoxville is four more hours down South and they can still be available to that Cincinnati franchise, it's a big step for us and I was really happy to establish that," Craigen said

"Double Edge Sword" is what concerns me. Yes it is nice to have another quick
source for players, but we have learned the sometimes downfall of having two
AHL affiliates. Do we compromise players on loan for a one or two day stint
when they could be resting or working out with the team. Remember our first
year in the IHL when Utica (AHL) was still using us as an ECHL level feeder.
We had players bouncing two and three times a week from one team to the other.
I like the thought of stashing a prospect with a team below for first or second
line play, but make sure we have the bottom line decision on all moves.

I believe this agreement has been in place for a few years now. Every now and again you need a player and Knoxville is nice and close (and vice/versa). If memory serves Paul Lynch, Mark Van Vliet (who apparently has been released already), Travis Hanson, Ervin Muskovos(G), and Sean Collins (G) have all made the trip up and down I-75. I'm sure there are more but it seems to work for both teams.
