OK, I hope in the next few weeks I'm proven wrong, but I was not impressed. Our team had a lot of problems with maintaining control of the puck in our zone, gave up waaaaayyy too many breakaway chances, and shot too many pucks with no screen from way out when the goalie had time to take a sip of water before he made the save.
Our goaltending was pathetic. We are now 8 points out of first place after six games, and were totally schooled in our building on opening night.
Something needs to change fast, or we will be out of contention by Christmas. |

Cheverie, Smith, and Pickard have all floundered with our "defense" in front of them.
Almost every night so far has shown sparks of offensive talent, only to be proven futile with some questionable defense.
Benn Olson is going to be a huge liability on the ice. |

The 'Clones are notorious slow starters, and there have been more call-ups and send downs through these first six games that half the players must feel like yo-yo's. They have really had very little opportunity to work together as a unit.
That being said, tonight they were outplayed in every area. The penalty kill was God-awful, puck handling poor, goal tending terrible, and the Cyclones had no answer for the speed and aggressive play of Wheeling. Olson might as well just skate straight to the penalty box when he comes on the ice and save the ref the time in raising his arm.
They have light years to go before they are going to be able to compete at this rate. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

When the Cyclones went ahead tonight 2-1, it was the first time all year they have been ahead except for 15 seconds in the first Kalamazoo game!!. Cheverie now has a GAA average above 5 in four games. Penalty killing was 69% before tonight and is now even worse. No presence in front of the opponents goal. No personality to this team. Great at carrying the puck out but then nothing. Probably the most sickening game I can remember. They gave up and even when they played badly Chuck's teams never gave up. Only thing worse than this performance was the pre game "ceremony". All that said......... see you all Tuesday night!! |

Have to agree with all said in previous posts..... HOWEVER I did see areas where once this team can gel they will give their opponets a rough road to go.
What I saw tonight was speed (not seen in a while); NOT being out-muscled all the time in the corners; and hard shots. The poor timing and lack of puck control will improve as these players have time to know their team mates and their strengths. THIS IS A TEAM SPORT!!!! And just 5 games is NOT enough time (especially with the early ups and downs for quite a few of our players). |

I see lots of issues on D. Fixable, so lets hope it gets fixed soon.
We're bigger, but at least tonight that is not translating more physical. Wheeling pimp slapped us all night.
And maybe I'm a old tyme hockey guy, but I saw Pierce take a shot to the head in the first period and The Captain get checked into the bench area in the 2nd and neither of those guys had to "pay" for those hits. Gotta make folks pay for that stuff, especially Lord. That guy is a cheap shot artist and when you don't make him pay he gets worse.
Disappointing game on multiple levels.

I saw a team which can pass the puck very well and has the potential to execute a quick-strike offense. Had the Cyclones finished better early, the game could have been over for Wheeling.
I like the aggressive pinching of the defencemen. This team-once it gets a bit more acclimated to the system-will probably still give up a lot of 2 on 1's, but will score a lot of goals as well. It is an offensively-oriented system which will be enjoyable to watch.
The third period was a disaster. Nothing more need be said about a period in which the Cyclones were outscored 5-1. The penalty kill is not sharp and Cheverie brings back memories-dare I say-of Gajewski. The penalty kill will improve. Hopefully Cheverie will as well. Even though he was hung out to dry quite a bit, he gave up more than a few soft ones tonight. Still, the season is still young and Cheverie had outstanding numbers in college.
Kelly Cups are won in May or June; never in October. |

Lord's a cheap shot artist? A pest at times, perhaps, but I have never seen him do anything resembling a cheap shot. Even if he has, he's never made a habit of it. |

I've never seen Lord NOT cross check/Head punch/slash in a game. Last night he put a stick to Pierce's head in the first period.

Disagree hrc66. Cups are won starting in October. You can't win the Cup if don't make the playoffs, and there innumerable stories of teams coming on strong at the end, and just missing the playoffs by one point. That one point all going back to an awful October. Every game counts, and pros should be ready to play every night. |

The defense is not to blame for the losses. In the 7-3 loss to Elmira the D had 2 goals and 8 of the 16 shots.Too many penalties,4 players were at least a -3 and they are either gone or not playing now.Poor showing by the offense. In the win over Elmira, Cheverie played well.PK was bad. Bartholomay was on PK which is a mistake.Good OT win. 3-2 OT loss to Kal,Fast gets caught in OT and has to take a bad penalty. 4-3 SO loss to Kal, slow start, D'agostino comes up big,3-3 score in 3rd with huge momentum on PP and Fast gets caught again so Pierce has to take penalty. The big question is Why did Fast get an opportunity in SO and not Eghoetz? 6 shooters and not a goal. 3-2 loss to Tol That was a game that escaped the Clones. 7-3 loss to Wheel Clones carried the play for most of the game.Killeen made 2 highlight saves that would have been goals and he was strong in net.Krantz should be playing before Olson and the PK sucked. This team has a new coach who I hope by now sees what he has and makes the adjustments. This team has talent and I see them making it to the end with the right lines and players. This is a work in progress and it is only going to get better.I am sure you will see a more relaxed but hungry team this week. |

I hope they don't get too much more relaxed and whole lot more hungry. We're 1-3-1-1, and 8 points out of first place only six games into the season, it can't get much worse. |

I must have watched a different game. Wheeling looked scary fast and was so aggressive on the penalty kill the Cyclones had trouble getting a shot on goal. The Cyclones were outmatched in every facet of the game, and completely fell apart in the third period when faced with a little adversity. |

Catch 22, "pimp slapped" love it! lol
From my perspective, I feel the Clones were certainly outplayed in every area. I felt that Wheeling was significantly more physical than the Clones. I kept waiting for Olson, Delory, or Hudson to make some of Nailers pay for their physicality, but they didn't. Haddad was really getting physical and mouthing off and that seems unusal from his performances last year, why, because he was allowed to do so.
I felt our transition game was very poor and we allowed Wheeling to control the front of our net.
As far as penalties, with the way the PK is performing, we cannot continue with the penalties!! I sit in section 110 row f and I watched Hunter slash two or three Nailers on his way to the bench, for which he was called. I cant remember if they scored on that PP, but it appeared as though he did that out of frustration.
It seemed like we were in our zone way more than in Wheelings, but that may be because of the system as mentioned before.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is only my third year of being a hockey fan, but that's what I seen from my point of view.
I do think the team will imporve, but it may come to late to make a strong push for the playoffs.
As said earlier by someone else, with all that said, I'll be there Tuesday. |
