CINCINNATI, Ohio - Barret Ehgoetz' 13th career game-winning goal came in the second round of a shootout tonight. His goal, teamed with a perfect five-for-five save performance from Cincinnati goalie Marc Cheverie, helped propel the Cincinnati Cyclones (5-5-2-1) to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators (8-2-0-3) in front of 8,241 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.
Both teams traded their respective chances in the opening period, but ended up being scoreless through 20 minutes. The Cyclones were finally able to break the deadlock when, at the 11:01 mark, Scott Lehman cashed in on a one-timer to give the home team a 1-0 lead which they would carry into the second intermission.
The third period was back-and-forth to say the least, as five goals were scored between the two clubs. Gladiators forward Andy Brandt scored a pair of goals, one at 3:22 and the other at 13:40, to give his team a 2-1 lead. Luckily, the advantage would only last 20 seconds as Dylan Hunter camped out in front of the net and blasted home a one-timer past Gwinnett goalie Dave Carrozzi (L, 12 saves, 5-1-0-2) to knot the score at two. Gwinnett regained the lead when a Dan Kissell wrist shot eluded Cyclones netminder Marc Cheverie (W, 21 saves, 5-2-1-1) at the 16:19 mark, giving the Gladiators a late 3-2 lead. Once again, though, the Cyclones were able to rally back as Dustin Sproat notched his first goal of the season with just 2:10 left in regulation to tie the score at three and send the game into overtime.
In the extra session, neither team was able to muster any real scoring chances; so for the second time this season, the Cyclones went into a shootout.
Barret Ehgoetz' was the lone Cyclones goal scorer in the shootout, burying his chance through the legs of Carrozzi. Meanwhile, Cheverie did to the Gladiators shooters what he has done to his last four opponents shut them down. Cincinnati's rookie netminder turned aside all five Gwinnett offerings to help his team earn the extra point, 4-3 the final. Ehgoetz now has 13 career game-winning goals, which is second most in franchise history. The Cyclones' record in overtime/shootout play is now 3-3.

MUCH better all around play against a quality opponent. The missed power play scoring chances (especially in the 1st period) were frustrating, but the boys kept working and played much better.
Not a great game by a long shot. TONS of missed power play chances and a couple of weak moments on the PK, but it was about 10 times better than previous home games. I'll take it.
It's good to have that Sproat kid back too. It makes a difference.

I had to leave the game a bit early. It had just gone to 2-1 Gwinnett. I guess I missed a little bit
It was great to see an outstanding crowd. Throwback Night is probably the most important night in recent Cincinnati hockey history. Had the Cyclones not drawn 6,000+ for the first Throwback Night in their second season (2007-08), then there is a very good chance that the team wouldn't have adjusted its pricing policies and would have relegated to the heavily populated Cincinnati Hockey Graveyard several seasons ago.
The Cyclones are now a .500 team with 13 points in 13 games. Skalde appeared to be so much more comfortable behind the bench last night. He was vocal for the first time all season and wasn't at all shy about expressing his displeasure with certain calls to both the ref and the linesmen.
I give Skalde a ton of credit. Two weeks ago, his team was in danger of burying itself by the end of the season's first month. Skalde kept his composure and did not lose his team. Two short weeks later, he has a team which has captured 9 out of its last 10 possible points and is playing pretty decently.
Skalde stepped into a very difficult situation (following Chuck Weber AND having little time to recruit) and weathered a significant early storm (1-8 start). A lesser coach could have easily 'lost it' and the season could have been effectively trashed by Thanksgiving.
A win tommorrow afternoon in Toledo will be an added bonus to a very impressive last two weeks. Not at all bad given that the team still hasn't found itself offensively. |

| Did anyone ever payback Ian McKenzie for his boarding penalty on Minella? I think I know the answer but I was hoping maybe someone stuck up for their teammate and I missed it while I went to the bathroom. |

There was no payback that I saw, unless you would classify winning as paying them back, which I do not.
When he made that hit, I told my son that someone would certainly pay for that. The gentleman behind me, alomost at the same time said, "they'll be sending Olson in for that." It didn't happen.

Ian still carries his elbows too high and takes bad penalties. I expected Olson to go after him but restraint seemed to be the better course of action especially with our PK. (I don't remember McKenzie actually fighting...ever. A few face washes, but no real fights.)
Olson's best play of the night was a diving block of a shot late in the third that saved a goal. I didn't know he had that in his bag of tricks. I thought he was a goon and no more. I'm glad to be proved wrong. |

We did notice a couple of extra shifts for Olson after the boarding, but nothing obviously came of it.
Hopefully one of the improvements we'll see is this team get more physical and intimidating. I think Sproat and having Roeder back will help that. If DeLorey and Olson are supposed to be our enforcers, I haven't yet seen evidence that either are effective. Maybe having Benson and Johnson the last couple of years spoiled me.
