The league that won't die continues, at least the article mentions that the Queen City Storm are dead.

I guess the Storm isn't going to make an official announcement on their website like Troy.

Does anyone know what the final reason for the club's demise was ?

The article says they're playing a game w/players left from Troy and Queen City so maybe that's why they haven't made any announcement yet - guess they haven't officially folded. I've gotten the impression that it wasn't what they wanted (to fold), that there was pressure from Sports Plus - but I don't know financially how they were doing. With Troy folding that probably made it harder for QC since they don't have a team here to play against. Seems the league is wrapping things up doing the best they can with what they've got left to work with.

Well, here's a few nuggets of information I've been able to glean from the whole situation. Some of the information is probably incorrect and a lot is incomplete but it's been a little difficult to get a complete story.

Some time last year, the owners of Sports Plus put it up for sale. An investment group won the bid and took over operations. That group put Nick Poe in charge of running it. Nick also helped put together the QC Storm and became 51% owner and GM.

Later last year, the transition had not yet been completed and the "original" owner accepted another bid from a different investor. That new investor has ties to Hader Hardware and a daughter or granddaughter that is/was a skater (figure or hockey, not quite sure) that will be running things now.

The new investor chose not to purchase the Storm (don't know if it was even an option). They found out that Nick was giving the Storm all of their ice time for free and they basically said nobody gets ice time for free anymore. So problem #1 for the Storm was that the ownership change at Sports Plus was going to drive up costs.

After Nick got the news of that the rink was getting pulled out from under him, I think he just gave up on the Storm and decided to walk away. A fourth hand tale I heard later on also said that Nick was housing the Storm at a hotel and had run up a bill of something like $15k-$20k that he was walking away from too.

During the transition from Nicks management group to the new group, some people in the Storm family were looking for a way to keep the club afloat. They were trying to find a rink that would "sponsor" them with ice time and were researching options for billeting the players. They may still be looking into it now but the options they had at the end of December weren't all that appealing. Their best offer of ice time then was something at like 3:00 AM. Not good for a pro team.

That last ditch effort might be part of the reason why there's a lot of uncertainty about the demise of the team. As I said in the beginning, some of the information is probably inaccurate or incomplete but hopefully there's enough truth in it to help paint a picture about how the deck of cards came falling down at Sports Plus.

If you ask me, it was kinda crappy what the "original" owner did to Nicks investment group. There were a lot of problems with operations at the rink both before and after Nicks group took over. But now there's a lot of cautious optimism by people that frequent the rink because of some of the changes that have already taken place.

Don't know the real reason for the demise of the Storm, I keep getting conflicting stories from several people. In my opinion, the Storm was put together way too quickly without gathering a base of financial backing which is mostly the case with those lower league teams that fold during the season, case in point the Lapeer Loggers of that league. If given the chance to advertise and get their name out there to the public, I think they could have made it. Was enjoyable to watch and was inexpensive. I was out at SportsPlus on Friday for the U.C./Toledo game and was shocked at how deserted the place was. The game didn't start until 9:30 but the Canadian rink was not even being used. Most of the games in the game area were gone.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

My son spoke with the owner and the owner of the Storm sent me a message via Facebook. Can't divulge but something is up. Hopefully good news.

Sounds encouraging. On Facebook page the latest answer to someone's post just says moving in a different direction or something to that effect. Hope they can regroup and work something out.

It would be nice to see them at the Gardens and work out an affiliation with the Cyclones. Won't happen but it still would be nice.

It will be a step in another direction but not for the rest of this season. Look for news in the next few weeks. All I can say is.....
