Well, a great opening night is under our belts and we came out victorious. Discuss!
I just got in from the arena. What can I say, dawned the 'ole custom jersey, had a great time with all of the others who were doing the same. The buzz was all around. I was even greeted by a herd of Cyclones fans at the Northbend McDonalds who saw me walking in dawning the jersey.
I enjoyed the emphasis that hockey has finally returned to Cincinnati and the opening video package as well as the players annouuncing where they were from (very MNF-like feel) was a nice touch. I would have kind of liked a bit more of promotion for the opener, but oh well. A schedule magnet and a filmsy program are what they are. I'm really not sold on Paul Horton. It just sounds too much like what he is, a NEWS caster. Maybe he'll grow on me like the jerseys did, but just a thought.
For those of you who remember the IHL days, did anyone notice that Marc Labelle (Cyclones Defensemen during the later 90's IHL seasons) was standing outside the doors by will call and the box office? I nearly talked to him, but was too excited about getting into the building. Definitely sounded like WEBN was supplying the music, which I would say was a decent mix. Sure you had your AC/DC, but you also had your Barenaked Ladies. Pretty interesting to see some Pensacola fans make the trip. From all of the ones that I saw, they sure love their retro jerseys.
It was an exciting game, and though we were outshot, we played with a lot of heart. I know this sounds cliche because we have a young team, but I have never seen so much defensive effort from a hockey team in my life, especially on the penalty kill. These guys aren't afraid to dive and use their body to block a puck. Grumet-Morris, as anticipated, was great, and only one reflected slapshot got past him. The one thing I will comment on is that we need to really start capitilizing on the Powerplay. This seemed like a problem in preseason but it really showed tonight. This game was a penalty every minute and although we were moving the puck around in their zone, just couldn't seem to score. It was ironic actually that after all of those 5 on 3 oppurtunies we couldn't capitilize on, Gayda makes a brilliant defensive play and scores short handed as soon as they go on the PP.
All in all, just a great time watching the Clones live with a good, electric attendance on hand. Only problem I encountered was that the token drunk college-aged jackasses we seated a couple of rows behind us, who just shouted the whole time that the other team's players were a slang term for a femal reproductive organ (mature), yelling for "T&A" for the two girls that came out with DJ Mitts, yelled that the opposing team was the Ass Pilots and yelling for the flying V formation.
And no YMCA?

I went in with free tickets my sister in law won somewhere and left with a 1/2 season ticket pack for three seats. I was very skeptical about this season after living thru that last half of the final season where I felt like going to the game was a chore. All in all, the play was decent for a first game. The goaltending was excellent and I was impressed with some of the passes made for guys who have been together for such a short time.
The biggest highlight of the night for me was seeing all the old friends, I was impressed with how many people from the old days are back.
The biggest issue I have was the ushers harrasing my son because he wasn't in the seat his ticket said he should be in. We had tickets for $17.00 seats and he moved to $12.00 seats. The usher told him "we are not going to tolorate seat jumping this year". Well Mr. Short Usher with the Bad Haircut, you better learn to tolorate things like that if you want to have fans come back. I heard some other people had usher issues also.

I think it would be wise to work on the 5 on 3, not as a penalty kill, but as a Power Play. I suspect we will see many of those this year.
I thought the crowd was great, but I never heard an attendance figure. It was rather like seeing a Cyclone Jersey travelling museum. Does anyone have or know of a complete collection, with the Halloween, Hawaiian, each year logo changes, the McDonalds and all the specialty types. That would make a great addition to a website.
I was amazed how many faces I recognized by me, and talking with some, how many like me have come back after either questionable customer service or skyrocketting prices.
It feels like coming home again. |

Yeah! Where was the Y-M-C-A?!?! Come on now... We "NEED" the Y-M-C-A in the 2nd Period at around the 3:00 - 4:00 minute mark! 
I loved the video intro!! VERY NICE!
I was very pleased with attendance. Especially being a Friday High School Football night! Should be a slightly better crowd tonight (Saturday).
Paul Horton just doesn't cut it. I noticed they added some more effects to his voice, but it still is difficult to hear him. There is TOO much echo (from the arena) and most of the time it sounds if he's eatting the mic (his words seem to "merge" together and become unintelligible). Maybe it IS the speakers over in 140? Or maybe it's the sound-system?
Thanks to Wildman for stepping in and helping out with the "Hey, Wildman, How Much Time's Left?" bit!

| I think the speakers in 120 have too much bass or something. They just rumble when the announcements are made. I couldnt make out what they were saying during the "sweetheart of the game" right above us! |

I hope people were not complaining about the ushers "attempting" to try to keep people from going down the aisles while the puck is in play. It is standard procedure in other arenas,but has been a problem at ours. I have been complaining about that for years.
Depending on the usher, there was a concerted effort to keep people from going to their seats while the puck was in play.
It was a fun evening and it was great seeing old friends.
Can't wait until tonight!

I guess my other opening night question was about the three stars of the game. It seemed that came as a surprise, and we waited for a time, but the announcement was a bit chaotic. I dont know if they ever actually did.
Oh well, its opening night for everyone I suppose. |

| We also need to give the mike back to the Wildman! Paul Horton sounds like an IDIOT.I went Friday nite ( I have never missed an opening nite!)and was disgusted by his lack of enthusiasm.I also miss the horn! Long live Howie and Paul. |

| I think just about everybody I've talked to agrees that Horton just isn't getting the job done. I don't think he's lacking enthusiasm like you say, freak998, I just can't get into the guy's voice. Like I said previously, it sounds like what he formely was, a NEWS CASTER, not a voice I should be hearing to get pumped up at a hockey game. He also needs to stop trying to be funny with the prenunciation of the Canadian/French-sounding last names. |

| What's up with the ushers & their power trips? So what if my ticket is elsewhere, the game's not for a half hour/hour and I want to watch warm-ups and say hi to my friends. So much for that! What a joke. I've watched warmups from the glass in NHL arenas during the playoffs and never had a problem, what's the deal? As long as I go back to my seats, geez people. |
