CINCINNATI, Ohio - Defenseman Zach Jones netted his first professional goal at the 2:52 mark of overtime, giving the South Carolina Stingrays (25-18-1-1) a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones (19-17-6-2) at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday Night.

For the first time in the three-game series, South Carolina drew first blood when Jake Hauswirth wristed home his seventh goal of the season past Cyclones netminder Marc Cheverie (OTL, 20 saves, 13-8-3-2) for a 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting the 'Rays 12-6 in the opening period, the visiting team held the advantage heading into the first intermission.

The score remained the same until the 15:40 mark when Dustin Sproat tipped home a Brian O'Hanley point-shot for the game-tying goal. Not even three minutes later, Adam Comrie potted his third lamp-lighter in as many games when his wrist shot from just inside the right circle beat Stingrays goalie Jared DeMichiel (OTW, 32 saves, 14-8-0) to give Cincinnati a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes.

In the third period, South Carolina rallied back as Dan Eves poked home the game-tying goal at the 13:54 mark to knot the score at two and send the game into overtime. Just under three minutes into the extra session, Nikita Kashirsky broke into the Cincinnati zone and dished a pass across the ice to a streaking Zach Jones, who buried the game-winning goal to give the Stingrays a 3-2 victory. It is the first time ever that South Carolina has won a game in Cincinnati during regular season play.

The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:
1. Zach Jones (Game-winning goal for South Carolina)
2. Adam Comrie (1 goal, 1 assist for Cincinnati)
3. Grant McNeill (2 assists for South Carolina)

The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena this Friday, February 4 when they welcome in the North Division-leading Wheeling Nailers at 7:30pm. The first 2,000 fans ages 2-12 will receive a Brian O'Hanley Kids Jersey T-Shirt courtesy of Meijer. Discounted ticket packages and single game tickets for the 2010-2011 season are available now. So how did the boys play?
Just looking at the game sheet it looks like we held their shots down and stayed out of the box again.

They deserved a better fate tonight. Several good shots and scoring chances but just couldn't find the back of the net. Defense was solid again. Biggest question coiming out of tonight is Scott Reynolds. Got hurt in the 1st period and didn't return. Didn't look good at all leaving the ice.

Marc Cheverie left 2pt on the board tonight. The game was low scoring which is what I expected from the series. The Cyclones had the game in hand until Cheverie got beat on the glove side. It was a puck he should have stopped and his reaction showed it.

Can't win 'em all.

The upside is that post all-star break we have 3 strong defensive games and have consistently stayed out of the box and scored on the PP.

The downside is that it was all against one team. The standings say that was a good team, but still... The jury is out for now.

It is certainly something to hang our collective hats on though.

I thought it was a game which we should have won. Not to pin it all on the goaltending, but each of the three goals was stoppable-though the first was at the end of a terrible possession where it almost seemed to serve justice that the Cyclones were scored against.

5 out of 6 points vs. SC is nothing to take lightly. The team seems to be playing much more solidly on both ends of the ice.

Did anyone else notice that Hudson hasn't played the last two games? Is he hurt or is he a healthy scratch? We didn't seem to miss him in either case.

Reynolds did not look good coming off the ice. Hoping that his injury isn't as serious as it looked.

They definitely looked much, much better. That is the type of loss, although disappointing, that is much easier to swallow because of the improved play.

I do think that the second SC goal was problematic in two areas. First, it looked to me like the scorer was allowed to waltz into the slot unopposed and take the shot. Second, the shot appeared to be a shot that Chev could have handled.

Overall, they kept the play and pressure in the attack zone for a majority of the game. It did seem like SC picked up the forecheck in the third period and you can tell that the Clones definitely dont handle that well. Although I dont think they did last year either.

Five out of six points is a good thing though!

The Baby Pens have called up Ben Street, Nick Petersen and Patrick Killeen for the weekend. Enjoy your four points.

This couldn't happen at a worse possible time for Wheeling, so of course it would. Nothing's ever easy for the Nailers.

SC plays in K-Zoo twice this weekend and their goalie has been called up to Hershey. They had an EBUG with them the entire time here and don't know where Ford is--called up or hurt. Not helpful.

On the bright side, Dov Grumet Morris signed a PTO with Hartford. Good luck to him although part of me would like to see him play when Greenville visits

BooHoo.

Thats been life here constantly for the past few years. I guess one upside of not really having anyone playing spectacularly is that for once our bench is pretty stable.

We had gotten used to coming to the games early just to see who was dressed (and often it was some guy from Mercyhurst we'd never heard of). So far this year that hasn't really been necessary.

Always appreciate your insight. The Nailers rarely seem to be able to use a top notch ECHler for a year or more like we did Desjardins and Desharnais. Perhaps the Wheeling night life provides players with additional motivation

I hate to bring this up, but what's your best guess on the Nailer's status for next season? Attendance numbers haven't exactly been encouraging in either Wheeling or Johnstown. Do the Brooks Bros. continue to fund the team in spite of these numbers? I'd love to see them back next year. And for years thereafter.

Catch22, it's not the first time the Nailers have been hurt by a mass call-up either. I wasn't whining, just can't believe the horrible timing and bad luck. A weekend sweep would all but put the division away. Petersen's supposedly up because Brett Sterling got stuck in Chicago over the all-star break. His call-up has not been officially announced.

As far as the future of the team in Wheeling, season ticket renewals have already started, much earlier than usual. What that really means, I have no idea.

I'm not a season ticket holder, so a lot of info provided in the package is unknown to me. The prices are significantly higher, which has led some to believe Johnstown's out of the picture. But now, people are saying there will be games there again. You'd think this would be clarified in the renewal letter...but it's not. The Nailers are very poorly run on the business side, so it's not surprising.

I've heard nothing about a new lease at Wesbanco, and the last lease was negotiated rather harshly through the press, so I'm sure it will be no easier this time.
