Who is this kid? The 2nd coming of Ogie Oglethorpe?

He looks like he's had some issues but he's still young and has never played at this level. If Skalde knows and likes the kid then give him a chance, bit with a VERY short leash. One 5 minute major due to intent to injure and he's GONE.

I do generally agree with Fangers in cases of guys that are established 3 time losers at the pro level, but again, this guy is still young so it's hard for me to close the book on him just yet.
He certainly isn't afraid to hit, so if he cleans it up and skates under control, he might just be a nice asset.

Hard call. No doubt about that.

BTW - Looking at the Franelli hit... It was absolutely a HARD hit, but after watching it a couple of times I'm not even positive it was a penalty.

-He cruised in and did not step into the hit.
-He did not leave his feet.
-He did not get his elbows up high.
-Franelli turned just before he got hit.

I'm sorry, but I don't see any Oglethorpe there. It mostly looks to me like the kid just likes to hit freaking HARD and sometimes it works out poorly. There was another clip (Tavaris?) of a guy with his head down and turning just before the hit.
He's certainly no angel, but I'm not seeing anything that earns him a lifetime ban from hockey.
Short leash... Yes.
No chance for a leash... Not in my opinion (yet).

Last year Ovechkin took a 5 and a misconduct on a clean hit. He basically was just twice the man of the guy he threw into the boards and the result was a bad one.

Or maybe I'm seeing it all wrong and the guy is a goon. But from what I just watched he is at worse no dirtier than Matt Cooke, and they just gave him an "A".

JMO.
Yours may vary.

@Catch22

My thoughts exactly on the Fanelli hit. Fanelli put himself in a dangerous position as he turned right as Liambas initiated the hit. How can it all be put on Liambas.

As far as the hit that ruptured a guys spleen, I haven't seen any video of it but if it's anything like most of the video then he probably just hit a guy really frickin hard. If a hard hit results in an injury, that's unfortunate but are we to suggest that if a guy injures someone via a check he is to be removed from game. How about the guy that hit Robo causing an injury that required surgery? That was just a good hard hit that caught Robo just right.

I think the Matt Cooke comparison is a good one. Cooke hits people hard, every so often he catches someone dirty.

The team has a need right now and there's a chance Liambas can fill it. Give him a chance, if he screws it up, give him the boot.

Are you comfortable enough with our penalty kill to give the kid a chance? Under Skalde in Bloomington last season, he was good for an average of 6.76 PIMs per game. The fighting majors are one thing (coincidental), but it's the aura of the cheap and dirty we have to worry about.

Every coin has 2 sides...

Are you comfortable with the opposition taking liberties with our skilled guys? That's what has been happening with Olson out of the line up.

My guess is, even he the kid is signed, he won't see more than a few shifts per game.

Lawmaster didnt think the hit was a cheap shot and he's the one that got the ruptured spleen.

In fact, he described him as a "classy" guy. I'm not trying to convince anyone to "embrace" the kid, but I'm not passing judgement to the extreme of boycotting the team if he's signed.

If he crosses the line, give him the boot out of here. But, he's not even signed with the team.

Enough said. if you think a Matt Cooke type is what is needed by the Clones then this kid should make you happy. Cooke is a head hunter extraordinaire

Specifics? When and to who have "liberties been taken"? I have no problems with a player capable of responding. Olson played that role. Take liberties and you will pay. That is a lot different than an instigator whose only job is to go out and cause havoc and harm. Olson did not play that role. Took regular shifts and PK. The fact you think "he won't see more than a few shifts per game" indicates you think he would only be used to instigate and cause havoc. Who would you sit or cut by the way if he were signed?

Given that Skalde reportedly has recently said a signing is coming that will raise some eyebrows, and this kid is saying he wants to come here and has played for Skalde before... Yeah.
Seems to me he's probably going to be on the bench soon.

I went through what I could find on Youtube and can't find anything I find to be Sgroi-like or terrible in any way. In reality, I'm seeing some injuries that resulted from the hittee having his head down on a pretty damned clean but brutally hard hit.
The Fanelli hit reminds me of Stevens - Kariya in the cup finals a few years ago. It was a brutal freight training that resulted in Kariya being knocked out cold, but it was a clean hit on a player with his head down.
Fanelli was head-down, and turned towards the boards just before the hit. The result was tragic, but I don't see how you can totally put the blame on Liambas for that.

And the kid can fight. No doubt.

You cant really judge a guy just by Youtube tho... People post only certain things on there and its never "look how good Liambis is on the backcheck" its going to be "OMG CHECK OUT THIS HUGE HIT!!!!!" he might have something none of us have seen because he hits big and thats all that gets highlighted. There is a long list of solid players who have had suspensions

old time hockey bar the door, clear the track, ITS ALL OUT WAR!

Cincinnati:
Add Mike Liambas, F signed contract, 3/4

This was just put on ECHL's transaction page.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Well I guess we'll all get to see how it works out.

I hope this turns out better than when Olsen taunted the whole Wheeling bench and they all looked the other way... and promply beat us 6-3.

You never know.
We started the season with an enforcer nobody would fight with. That was a waste of a bench spot.

Of course, there is room to spare on the bench these days.
