i said earlier that after talking to chuck about this that i get where he is coming from but i'm still not sure i like it. shoot outs are a game of chicken between the goalie and shooter....the guy that flinches first loses. i think i would make the choice based off of momentum....does our goalie or our shooters have more momentum going into the shootout. if it was a high scoring game and the goalie was on a roll making great saves late in the game, i'd opt to shoot first. if the goalie was on a roll and the scorers were having a tough night, i'd opt to shoot second hoping that the shooters would gain some energy from seeing their goalie make a great save. those are just a couple of scenarios. i'm just not sure the shoot first by default is a good strategy.
while i don't think the shootout is the best way to settle a tie score and that is why there are shootouts...ties suck. the nervous energy of an overtime is best thing in sports, but since i can't see any professional hockey league changing to palyoff style overtimes for the regular season it looks like shootouts are here to stay. |
