CINCINNATI, Ohio – Matheiu Aubin extended his point-scoring streak to five games with a goal and an assist while Joe Devin picked up the game-winning tally as the Cincinnati Cyclones (8-7-0-3) defeated the Toledo Walleye (9-12-0-0) by a 3-2 final score in front of 7,723 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.
Cincinnati raced out to a 1-0 lead as Mathieu Aubin swatted in a rebound for his team-leading eighth goal of the season at 6:25. As the goal light came on, the shower of teddy bears fell from the stands as Cyclones fans threw new and gently-used stuffed animals onto the ice, which were donated to the Cincinnati Police Department. Then, at 15:31, Jeremy Klaver’s slap shot from just outside the right circle eluded Walleye net minder Ryan Zapolski (L, 28 saves, 2-1-0) to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead. Toledo cut their deficit in half at 17:55 when Nick Oslund blasted a shot from just inside the Cincinnati blue line past Cyclones goalie Chet Pickard (W, 29 saves, 5-6-0-1), making it 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
Joe Devin was the lone goal-scorer in the middle stanza as he sniped a puck past Zapolski’s right shoulder at the 7:53 mark, extending the Cyclones cushion to 3-1 at the second intermission.
After a back-and-forth third period with several chances for both teams, Toledo’s Bryan Rufenach batted a puck out of mid-air and past Pickard to pull the Walleye within a goal at the 17:01 mark. However, in the final minutes, Cincinnati’s defense did not falter as they held on to win by a 3-2 final score.
With another home victory, the Cyclones remain undefeated in regulation at U.S. Bank Arena with a record of 6-0-0-2.
