CINCINNATI, Ohio – Anthony Luciani earned his first-career hat trick while Mathieu Aubin enjoyed a five-point night as the Cincinnati Cyclones (12-9-0-3) flew past the Kalamazoo Wings (16-11-0-2) by an 8-5 final score in front of 5,525 at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday night.
The Wings opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the first period as Taylor Ellington beat Cyclones goaltender Brian Foster (W, 30 saves, 6-1-0) through a screen to make it 1-0. However, Cincinnati roared back with three unanswered goals to pull ahead 3-1; Jonathan Hazen and Mathieu Aubin each buried shorthanded goals, Aubin’s from just past the red line, followed by Justin Vaive’s second tally of the season at the 16:10 mark. Kalamazoo managed to temporarily stop the bleeding with a power play goal at the 17:52 mark by Brian Haczyk, pulling the Wings within one. Yet, with just under a minute to play in the frame, Anthony Luciani buried a wrist shot through the legs of Kalamazoo net minder Maxime Clermont (L, 25 saves, 4-4-0) to give the Cyclones a power play goal and a 4-2 edge after 20 minutes of play.
The offensive trend continued in the middle frame as a combined four goals were scored between the two clubs. Ellington buried his second of the night with 1:27 gone to pull Kalamazoo within a goal at 4-3. Then, at 9:26, Dustin Cloutier potted the equalizer for his first professional goal, making it 4-4. However, just like in the first period, Cincinnati found more late offense; Luciani lit the lamp twice in the final 5:01 of the period to complete his first pro hat trick and give the Cyclones a 6-4 cushion through two periods.
The Cyclones continued their offensive ways early in the third as Aubin notched his team-leading third multi-goal game of the season at 3:37, making it 7-4. Then, at 16:12, Mike Pelech poked a loose puck to Evan Trupp in the slot who dangled past Clermont for an 8-4 lead. The Wings scored a late goal when Cloutier buried his second of the night with just 1:01 to play, capping off the scoring at 8-5. Cincinnati held on to win by the same score. It was the first time since January 14, 2009 that the Cyclones have put eight goals on the board in a single game.
“It was a wild one, that’s for sure,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “We need to find success against [Chicago and Kalamazoo], and we have of late. It’s really nice to get these points at home and it’s great to see guys get rewarded for their hard work with some big nights.”
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:
First Star: Anthony Luciani (3 goals for Cincinnati, first pro hat trick) Second Star: Mathieu Aubin (2 goals, 3 assists for Cincinnati) Third Star: Ryan Annesley (3 assists for Cincinnati)
Cincinnati will close out the 2011 portion of the calendar on Friday night when they visit the Toledo Walleye at 7:00pm. Fans can hear the game on the Cyclones Radio Network (1050-AM, America One) beginning at 6:45pm. That same night, there will also be a PBR Express Viewing Party at Mac’s Pizza (205 W. | I expected very little tonight with seven call ups and a suspension and look what Santa brought-- eight goals!! 13 goals against K-Zoo in a week. The offensive effort has been there all year but it now looks like they have learned to finish--especially Luciani who made two great accurate wrists shots. Now in 6th place on percentage of points won and playing great. Kudos to Vaive who wasted no time sticking up for his teammate. This group really looks like a team now. |

I don't know if I would get overly excited about the goals output. My understanding is K-Zoo's goalie (Clermont) was out of hockey selling insurance three weeks ago and is in due to call ups. He looked like he should be selling insurance anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I will take it and it was a fun game to watch. Just keepin' things in perspective. |

| Aubin's goal from center ice was a beauty. Mathieu had already turned to go to the bench and wasnt even looking at the goal when it went in. |

Cloneinator: Not sure where you got your info but Clermont has spent the last four years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Gatineau Olympiques. Last season, the 19 year old made 48 starts and posted four shutouts. Clermont was a 6th round draft pick (174th Overall) by the Devils in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Clermont was reassigned to Kalamazoo from the New Jersey Devils on 10/07/11 and has been with them all year. Until last night he was 4-3 with a .892 save percent-- the same percent as Gill their number 1 has as well as Brian Foster. Chet has a similar .888 Save percent. Granted he had a bad night last night but he has not been selling insurance.
My excitement was not due to 8 goals which I doubt they will score again, but the fact they scored eight goals with eight players missing. They had a great excuse to roll over but rather they came together as a team as demonstrated by Vaive and put out a strong offensive effort. |

DBC, I stand corrected and apologize. It was what I was told last night. I am sorry about the error and thanks for setting me straight.
And you are 100% correct. If they put up eight goals against a solid goal tender with the seven guys called up, that IS something to get excited about.
May you and yours (and everyone else on here) have a very Happy New Year! |

The info on the K-wings goalie came from me by way of the Kalamazoo fan in the stands. Even if that was the case, he still had a good night despite 8 goals allowed. We easily could have had 12 or 14 but he made some great point blank saves. Only Aubin's "dump-in" was totally his fault.Brian Haczyk's first goal and his play over all was sheer hustle every second he was on the ice. More play like that and we'll lose him also to the "A" . |

Good to hear things are looking better. Haven't made it to any games over the holiday period.
And the boys are a bit above 500 too.

Great crowd, sloppily played game. I thought Jonathan Hazen was the best player on the ice and should have been one of the three stars but the things he did throughout the night don't show up on the stat sheet. Anthony Luciani had the hat trick but he didn't have a great game. He finished the game minus-1.
I don't go to Cyclones game often, but when I do, I am always impressed by the number of fans that show up wearing jerseys, and from all eras of Cyclones hockey. It's a good thing. |

| It is interesting seeing all the different jerseys from over the years Donnie. It seems like I routinely see one I had not seen before, and I am down there pretty often. |

| Agree Donnie that it was a sloppy game--exciting but not great hockey. Hopefully you will get a chance to stay around and see them again when many of the players are back and they play like they have played in the previous 4-5 games. Seven call ups--one suspension-two 20 year old Federal league players, and two players fresh off long term IR really didn't provide you a good picture. Also have never seen more players lose their edge on the ice. Agree on Hazen--played strong on both ends. Luciani plays mostly in one end but he does have a shot. Picked out two small open spots and hit them both on the first two goals. Happy New Year to all. |

Boy I had a bad post and info. I was reading the highlights and mistakenly called Jonathan Hazen - Brian Haczyk ! Hazen's goal was pure on his own because everyone else had peeled off to go back on defense but he never quit, kept the puck and somehow still managed a shot outnumbered about 3-1. Hustle like that will earn a promotion before long. As for the jerseys, the new logos are probably outnumbering the old about 5-1 with most olds being player ones. Still stick by my olds but sometimes break out a twister logo. |

I was aware the Cyclones were playing with a depleted lineup. All teams at the minor pro level have periods every season where they're missing guys due to callups, injuries and suspensions.
I don't go to ECHL games expecting to see strong, mobile defensemen that can move the puck and make that good first pass on a consistent basis, crisp passing in the neutral zone, strong defensive zone coverage, guys with great hockey sense and goaltenders that don't create second (and third) chances by coughing up rebounds. Even with their best lineup on the ice, in a league comprised primarily of first and second-year pros, it's always going to be a game filled with guys forcing plays, defensive breakdowns and mistakes. But often times, because of the mistakes and breakdowns, ECHL games are far more entertaining than some of the NHL games I've seen.
The exciting thing for me, if I were a regular at Cyclones games, would be watching these young guys get better and improving in the essential parts of the game as the season goes along. One of the things I liked about Hazen was his hockey sense. Watching him not try to force plays and make the right decisions with the puck was far more exciting for me than seeing Luciani score three goals.
Bottom line is the two games I have attended this year were a fun time. And that's what the sports and entertainment industry is all about.
