CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones (26-19-1-7) rattled off four unanswered goals in the final two periods to defeat the Kalamazoo Wings (30-19-2-4) in come-from-behind fashion by a 5-3 final score in front of 5,935 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night. It was the fourth largest crowd to watch a game at 100 Broadway this season.

Cincinnati drew first blood at 17:54 of the opening period when Dan Eves lit the lamp for the 12th time this season, lifting a turnaround wrist shot over Wings goalie Maxime Clermont (L, 22 saves, 10-10-1-1) for a 1-0 Cyclones lead. However, Kalamazoo potted a pair of goals just 1:43 apart as Dustin Cloutier and Eric Kattelus both tallied to push the Wings ahead 2-1 after 20 minutes.

In the middle stanza, Brian Haczyk extended Kalamazoo’s lead to 3-1 as he blasted in a shot from just inside the right circle at 2:53. Mathieu Aubin was dragged down from behind by a Kalamazoo defender, setting up a penalty shot at 13:28; the Cincinnati captain cut down the middle and sniped a shot over Clermont for the first penalty shot goal of the season for Cincinnati, making it a 3-2 game. Then, at 17:40, Aubin struck again with a low wrist shot that found the net to knot things at three. Just 40 seconds later, Matt Sisca finished off a three-on-one odd man break for Cincinnati by batting in his 18th goal of the year to give the Cyclones a 4-3 edge at the second intermission.

In the third period, Kalamazoo peppered Chet Pickard (W, 36 saves, 10-10-0-2) with 13 shots but the Cincinnati net minder continued to shine between the pipes. He finished with his best outing of the season, making 36 saves. Then at 17:51, Sisca stole a puck away at center ice and went in alone on Clermont; after a quick deke, he fired a snap shot off the crossbar and into the net – sealing a 5-3 victory for Cincinnati. It was the Cyclones 14th come-from-behind win this season.

The Cyclones Radio Network Stars of the Game are as follows:

First Star: Mathieu Aubin (2 goals, 1 assist for Cincinnati)
Second Star: Matt Sisca (2 goals for Cincinnati)
Third Star: Mike Pelech (2 assists for Cincinnati)

Third star of the game should have been Chet Pickard- yes that's
what I said ! Except for the last few minutes of the first period
he was on his game and made some serious stops on breakaway efforts.
If Chet could give Foster every third or fourth day off, we still
might have a chance this year.

Could not agree more Bags. Considering he was left hanging out to dry on more than one occasion by his defense, he still made a ton of quality saves.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

Did anyone see what #20, Sirota did late in the 2nd that got Aubin so seriously pissed off? I missed it, but the captain tried hard to get that guy to drop 'em with him before the end of the period.

And I agree that this was Chet's best game in a long time. He was shakey early (again) and looked behind him for at least half a dozen of his early saves, but it looked like his confidence grew as the game progressed and he was clearly pumped at the final horn. Hopefully he can carry this with him going forward.

Glad to hear Chet had a good game. Lets hope it continues. They have a brutal number of games scheduled in March and need a strong duo in net.

Also don't think it was a coincidence that the team looked so lost when Aubin was out and how they have looked so much stronger--even with all the newbies-since he has returned.

Interesting that the team has lost six home games this year during regulation. Four of them have come in the 13 weekday games and only two in the 16 weekend games. Not sure what it means but could be that the team feeds a bit more on the larger weekend crowds and comes out flat when there is small fairly quiet crowd during the week. Or it could mean I have too little to do on a winter Sunday morning other than look at stupid stats like these!! They have two weekday games this week so hope they prove me wrong.

Whatchamadoodle made a few good saves and couldve been named one of the stars. The defense must not have given effort early on and then decided to later in the game. #2 played like #2 and #3 wasnt much better. That is before they started trying.

Eaves goal was about as pretty as they get. Aubin is a man on a mission when he is on shootout or like last night penalty shot. He has a plan. His one timer while moving away from the net was cool to see as well. Hes become a very good player and really belongs in the AHL.

Skalde bashers really need to examine. Hes winning with a garbage line up. Hes got a B team defense and four of the forwards wouldnt be able to play for the stinky dayton gems. If they win today and take 8 out of a possible 10 points this week you can look to Skalds and Cass and Foster as the main reasons. But he aint Chuck W so most of you types have ur minds so closed that the brightest beam of light couldnt shine on them. lol

It was a great team effort until tight after the Eves' goal when it seemed like everyone let off the gas. Up until then Chet was playing well, the team had players marked and helped Chet on weak side rebounds. It's lucky that happened late in the period giving them a chance to regroup at intermission or it could have very bad.

No question Chet deserved the 3rd star. If Foster merits 3rd star in a 2 goal, 26 save loss then Chet's 3 goals on 39 shots definitely does. I'd argue that Chet made more big saves last night than Foster did in the loss. That being said, I agree he needs to string a few games like that together.

The irony, as ratsncats brings up, is that the team is winning with a shortened bench filled in with a bunch of A level hockey players. Is this Skalde or the fact that these guys that get called up elevate their games because they want to stay at this level? I would say a bit of both. I wouldn't call this system a wholesale defense first system but there has been quite a shift from the "get everyone up the ice" mentality we saw last season and for most of this season. It reminds me of December when the won games with a short bench, it was a team effort. When the "AHL" guys came back the effort and team chemistry waned. Say what you want about them but I don't think I've ever seen Champagne or Devin chase into a corner with the effort that Ste Marie or Stauffacher, and more often than not it's the later 2 that come out of the corner with the puck or cause a bad pass/turnover by the opposition.

Speaking of Devin. What does he add to this team? I really can't think of anything. I don't know if he adds anything more than these A minus players. Gotta call em A- cause I think that the SPHL is of higher grade than the federals.

Life isnt fair when a Devin gets called up and Eaves has never had a callup.
