It is almost never ever EVER acceptable to heckle our own team/players. The one exception I see is if our player threw his stick into the stands or something equally stupid.
Some people from Section 121 decided to heckle Pickard last night in the second period after he gave up a goal. They were doing the "Pickard...you suck" chant. Totally unacceptable! Our team should feel safe in our building and that the fans will support them rather than demoralize them
I am not much of a Pickard fan myself but I would never heckle him. I realize that while he is the last line of defense, he is not fully responsible. Sometimes it starts with an offensive turnover which in turn creates a breakaway for the other team. And then the defense breaks down. The team does it to both Pickard and Foster. It doesn't matter who's in goal. And Foster doesn't stop them all either.
I just ask fans to support our team and players (regardless of how you feel about a player) rather than bring them down where they should be supported. That's just my two cents worth though.

| We also sit in section 121 and thought it was wrong as well. Talk to your friends all you want but DO NOT Heckle your own goalie. Maybe somebody needs to have a talk with them next friday. |

I thought that chant was from a group of Wheeling fans. If it was our folks they should be chanting: "I SUCK!" and leave it at that.
Speaking of the Wheeling fans, I spoke to a number of them last night and they are resigned to the fact they are going dark next year. I'm not a Wheeling fan but I hate to see anyone lose their team. Come on Mario, bail 'em out! |

Yeah, I thought that it was Wheeling fans at first when I heard it. I didn't think it would be a Cyclones fan, but then I looked down and sure enough, they were wearing Cyclones jerseys. These same people did the same chant to Delmas. They appeared to think it was funny to heckle Pickard.
I would hate to see Wheeling go under as well. It's nice having teams close for a rivalry. It makes the games more interesting and makes you want to cheer louder than the other teams' fans that come into town for the game. |

The Wheeling Nailers franchise began in 1981 at Cincinnati Gardens as the Cincinnati Firebirds in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. Just a couple weeks after setting up shop and taking season ticket deposits, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced they were going to place their top farm club in the CHL, which was then considered on par with the AHL, in Cincinnati at the Coliseum with the formation of the Cincinnati Tigers. The Firebirds owner -- not wanting to go head-to-head with the Tigers -- relocated his franchise to Winston-Salem, NC, and renamed the team Carolina Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds played in the ACHL through the 1986-87 season, then spent one season in the All-American Hockey League before joining the newly formed East Coast Hockey League in 1988, winning the Riley Cup (now Kelly Cup) as the league's first-ever champions. The name was changed to Winston-Salem Thunderbirds before the start of the 1989-90 season.
After the 1991-92 season, the franchise relocated to Wheeling, starting out as the Thunderbirds.
Former AHL Swords and WHA Stingers star Rick Dudley served as the franchise's head coach from 1981-86.
The greatest name in franchise history was Gretzky ... Keith Gretzky. |

I was sitting at the top of Section 121 last night, it was two guys sitting first row doing the chant and I agree it was uncalled for. They bronx cheered Pickard several times after too.
And yea, you would think with all the revenue the Pens are generating these days it would only be a drop in the bucket for them to financially support or be part of a new ownership group for their AA affiliate.
Is it official the Nailers are folding? Last I saw they were given another extension by the ECHL. Either way its not looking good. |

Jim and Rob Brooks have owned the Nailers for about 10 years. In a sense, the Penguins have owned the franchise for the past decade.
Robert Brooks, Sr., the brothers father is very wealthy and is or was involved in the Penguins ownership.

quote: Three years later, when the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins were in bankruptcy and facing the prospect of either folding or being bought out and relocated, Robert Brooks Sr. helped come to the rescue again.
Penguins legend Mario Lemieux, who already is in the Hockey Hall of Fame but still is playing after coming out of retirement, approached Brooks because he had heard of Brooks' role with the Pirates. They joined forces to pull the team out of bankruptcy and keep it in Pittsburgh.
Brooks' two sons both hold voting interests in the Penguins, the Pirates and their Double-A affiliate, the Altoona (Pa.) Curve. They also work closely with Wheeling's and Pittsburgh's American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and have been strongly influenced by their father. They understand the impact a sports arena as a whole, let alone the team, can have on a community.
It doesn't look good for the Nailers. They have been for sale since January and nothing has, at least publicly, happened. Hopefully an 11th hour buyer will materialize and the team can continue to play in Wheeling. |

| I've been hearing from people in Wheeling that a deal is about 90% done and that it just needs to get finalized. A couple of women I spoke with last night told me that the office staff isn't concerned about job loss and have been assured they will be back. I really hope that's the case. Losing the team would be a big blow to Wheeling. |

Interesting. I was just reading Dicky Dunn's column about that. |

If Dicky Dunn wrote it then it must be true. |

| Back on track with the fans heckling the home team, in section 109 there is a couple that have been STH for years, yet this year they wear jerseys of the opposing teams and their NHL affiliates, boo our players - especially Liambas, and yell at the refs any time a penalty is called on the opposing team. Not sure if its a anti-Skalde thing or what, as the last few years its been cyclones jerseys every game. |

Two of this herd were kicked out of USBA permanently. Momma bird and daughter sat directly behind the Cyclones bench and acted like two year olds-poorly behaved two year olds at that-ever since Skalde took over. My theory is that Skalde either didn't suck up to them at some fan club function long enough for their liking or he cut in line in front of them at the Golden Corral. It was ridiculous. They evidently were reassigned seats across the arena and continued to act like petulant children and were banned. I assume that they were refunded for their unused tix though I don't know.
The other two are the poster children for the whiners who have hated Sklade from day one. There are a bunch of them still around. For most of the past two seasons, most of them should have been issued pacifiers and rattles. The children just can't get over the fact that Chuck got promoted (they don't seem to understand that is the goal of ECHL coaches) and Stork-due to timing and circumstance-took the Greenville job. Skalde has caught their petulant and childish wrath since day one and has handled it like a gentleman. Which these boorish babies haven't deserved.
The fact is that if Skalde hadn't been saddled with a certain player he has to play every third game or so, first place in the division would have been sewn up by now. He deserves another year regardless of the outcome of this year due to this.
Let the children start screaming. LOL |

That's an insult to two-year olds everywhere: even the poorly behaved ones. |

| The 2 in the front row - well the mom - didnt seem bad, but her daughter was horrible. Somehow the other daughter and her bf/brother/whatever he is are still there though. She needs to go as well. The guy doenst seem bad, wearing the other teams jersey is fine, but she takes it a step to far. I was wondering where the 2 front row people went, they just stopped appearing one day. Good to know. |
