A real log jam in the Western Conference of the AHL including both our affiliates.:

5. Milwaukee 82 Pts 4 games remaining
6 Houston 82 Pts 3 games remaining
7 Peoria 82 Pts 2 games remaining
8 Lake Erie 82 Pts 2 games remaining
9 San Antonio 81 Pts 4 games remaining

Milwaukee plays at SA tonight and then each of the teams plays their remaining 2 or 3 games this weekend. Got to love it as every league has the same type of ending. Good luck to both teams.

This is crazy that the AHL season is still going while the NHL has playoff action.
ECHL should finish one week before the AHL and AHL should finish one week before the
NHL. This would allow last week callups for each league.

Thanks for the updates, Bags.

Last night, Weber's Rampage defeated Houston in OT. Huge win for SA as Houston is still in the mix. One more win (out of 2 remaining games) and they're in for SA.

Desjardins and Lake Erie won a big one last night. They have one left and there are so many teams still in it that I have no idea what combination of outcomes they need to get in. Same for Milw.

It's an odd system. It's been this way for the past few years-maybe longer. I don't get it.

With all the overtimes, maybe the leagues need to try one major
change- NO points for an overtime loss during the 4 on 4 period.
This would really make a push to win in regulation or the playing
overtime. If it does come down to the shootout, I can live with the
losers getting one point. A playing win deserves 2 points and stopped
under playing conditions doesn't deserve a point.

I agree with you on all points.

I'd love to see a true sudden death in the OT where the loser takes home nothing and enjoys it. Too many loser points are being distributed. It really would increase the excitement of the end of the third period and the OT.

I think that the objection would be that 4 on 4 doesn't suit some teams as well of others. Tough. Neither does the SO.

Peoria and Lake Erie are out. Sorry Cedrich but two goals allowed wasn't good enough.
85 is minimum to make playoffs and LE has only 84 w/ no games left.

Give me that job for one year and that season would be mighty interesting!
1. No overtime points for loss unless in shootout
2. Any goalie penalty involving physical action (tripping,misconduct...)
would result in a penalty shot.
3. 5' box in front of benches where line changes can be made-10 players
in that area fine-6 outside box too many !
4. No icing if player is within three feet of the red line in pursuit of
the puck.
5. Goalie can be touched (not roughed) if outside the crease if handling
a puck. Also goalie can not touch a player roughly if he is not in the
crease.
Still ready to make me commisioner .

The answer to the point system is much easier than all of that; just modify the system that soccer already uses. A win in regulation would be worth 3 points. If the game goes to OT or SO each team gets 1 point and the winner gets the extra point. If you don't like the awarding the winner of a skills competition points then at the end of OT each team gets a point and that's it.

The alternative point suggestions are all feasible but not sure what problem the suggested changes is trying to solve. When hockey changed from the system of having all games end at sixty minutes and ties splitting the two points, it was an attempt to make the game more appealing to the new markets and fan bases they were expanding into who hated ties and felt they should see a winner/loser for the money they paid. Same problem soccer has had in this country. Back then there were a lot of ties and the games got really boring in the last 10 minutes as both teams would often go into a defensive shell. I think the current system has worked great so why change things if there is no specific problem you are trying to fix.

I took a look at the final standings for the five AHL Western teams that went into the weekend fighting for four playoff spots and applied the two suggested alternatives along with the official final standings. In the first alternative, three points were awarded to a regulation winner and then the OT/SO points were awarded on the current 2-1 basis. The second approach had the three points awarded for a regulation win, 2-1 in OT and then 1-1 if no winner after OT doing away with the SO and bringing up the non winner/loser issue again. The points from those two alternatives and the official points under the current system were as follows:

Team Current System Alt 1 Alt 2
Milwaukee 87 118 114
San Antonio 87 118 113
Rochester 86 112 106
Houston 86 115 110
Charlotte 85 116 110

As you can see, the only difference is that under both alternatives Rochester didn't qualify and Charlotte did and the four teams that got in had a difference of two points currently where two points are awarded for a regulation win, three points in alternative one and four points in alternative two where three points are awarded by for a regulation win. In short one game could have made the difference in any system Any of these could be used but why change if there isn't a specific problem?

One change I would like to see no matter what point system you use is to extend the 4X4 OT to ten minutes. I love watching the speed and the up and down action of the 4X4 OT and think ten minutes would produce a lot more endings due to fatigue and penalties. An extra five minutes adds maybe 10 minutes of real time so travel really wouldn't be effected.

Great analysis.

I really like the extension of OT concept. It is a much more appropriate way to end a game than a SO and, as you pointed out, it wouldn't alter travel. The bus may idle outside the arena for a few seconds more.

Bags is now fired as commissioner and dbc gets to take the reins.

Wow- fired before I even got my nameplate on the door
Bottom line for me is I want the teams playing for the win both
in regulation and overtime and more than open to a 10 minute
OT (4 on 4). Think too many times teams are willing to play for
the tie and take the one point for the overtime loss.

How about nixing the shootout, all together.

Extending the OT timeframe, but making it 3 on 3 for the second 5 minutes.

If still tied at the end of that, then both teams get 1 point.

I still like the idea of soccer wins (3 points for regulation win). Then OT wins would be worth 2, and an OT loss worth 1.

This keeps the number of points down, and allows teams trying to 'catch' other teams to really turn it on in Regulation, if that's what they want to do.
