Brian O’Hanley, Nick Tabisz, Alain Goulet, Maury Edwards, Mathieu Aubin, David MacDonald, Bryan Elliott, Dan Eves, Mike Liambas, Mathew Sisca, Michael Pelech, Chris Reed, Matt McIlvane, Nathan Moon
I think this is a good group of a list. Aubin, Pelech, Sisca, Eves when he was healthy were a core group last year. Edwards and Reed can grow from a rookie year, hopefully Reed stays healthy. |

| Maybe its just my memory cells dying off but there are several names on that list I dont remember from last year. Thought the protected list was made up of those that played for the team last year. Can someone help this fading memory? |

The protected list means nothing. It's basically any player who signed a contract but wasn't released. It doesn't matter if the player even played a game. All it means is the Cyclones hold the right to 1st negotiations with these guys and can use them to complete any outstanding trades (which the Cyclones don't have this season). The standard practice is to protect every player you can in accordance with the rules. If you look at the lists from other teams you'll see 20to 25 guys on many of them.
The more important list is the Qualifying list which comes out in July. That list is the 8 players the Cyclones have given qualifying offers to. The players basically have until August to accept the offer, after which time they become free agents and can sign anywhere. I'm guessing the qualifying list will look something like this:
Dan Eves, Matt Sisca, Brian Elliot, Michael Pelech, Brian O'Hanley, Nick Tabisz, Maury Edwards, and Alain Goulet.
Mathieu Aubin is a veteran now and the rules are a little different with vets so they typically aren't qualified.
If I recall correctly Reed missed much of the season with "concussion like symptoms." To me that's a huge red flag and would keep me from using using a roster spot on him.
Matt McIlvane retired and Nathan Moon signed with us last year but impressed the San Jose and Worcester Sharks so much he spent the whole season in the AHL so there's no point in using a contract on him.
O'hanley spent most of the season and eventually signed a contract with them. I would guess he'll be back there next season but who knows. I'd qualify him. Either he ends up back here or if he signs a 2-way deal in Worcester we get something in return for his ECHL rights in the event the Sharks want to assign him to their ECHL affiliate.
Even though I like the guy and he's apparently a great locker room guy who's willing to do just about anything a coach asks of him I wouldn't qualify Liambas simply because he's buds with Skalde and as long as Skalde is here I don't see Mike going anywhere. If Skalde isn't here to reign Liambas in as needed, I'm not sure I want him here. |

Speaking of Skalde, are there any indications of what his future is with the team? I would think it's getting time make a decision one way or the other. |

| @Cloneinator - Rumors abound as to Skalde's future and I really don't want to make any assumptions. If the organization is making a change I do find it strange that nothing has been announced. |
