This is from the ECHL site following the league meetings. Any idea on what they're considering? I'm assuming it's an attempt to make playoff appearances more equitable for the Eastern teams.
Playoff format tabled until September
The format for the 2013 Kelly Cup Playoffs was tabled during the meeting to allow the Board to study additional options. Further discussion, and a decision on the playoff format, will take place at the Preseason Meeting of the Board of Governors to be held in September. |

I still say take the #9 team from the East and have them play the first round against the #1 team from the West. From the West will be the top 7 teams. Considering that Orlando is going to Las Vegas and Las Vegas is going to both Trenton and Reading during the regular season, travel in the playoffs shouldn't be that big of deal. This takes away the "bye" for the #1 West team in the first round. |

| I definitely like the idea of eliminating the bye for the Western #1. Ideally, it would also be nice to make the Western conference more competitive in regards to earning a playoff position. There's still a pretty wide disparity. I've wondered if there is a way to do a 10-6 split between conferences. Unfortunately, until the geographical differences are resolved, nothing is going to change due to costs. |

Don't know of one professional sports league where the two major groupings play each other except in the final round (and travel costs have nothing to do with that). Baseball, football, basketball, and hockey all play one major grouping against the other only for the final championship. There is a National League and an American League Champion crowned in baseball for example with a trophy and the same holds true for the other sports. The two major units in both Baseball and Football have teams all over the country so the Mets and Yankees could play in the World Series!! Football even has a bye week where the #1 and 2 divisional winners in the two conference play don't play and the bye doesn't bother me.
What would happen with your suggestion if the # 9 eastern team beats the # 1 western conference? Does it continue to play the other teams in the west in the next rounds and if they win them all they become the Western Conference Champion even though they are in the Eastern Conference? The only thing that should concern the Cyclones is what happens in the Eastern Conference playoffs and getting to the Finals. Could care less how many western conference teams play for their championship or how many games they play. |

Do you know of another league that has such an unbalance of teams as the ECHL does? It would be pretty bad if our 9th place team wiped out their #1, #2 and even #3 to reach the finals ! |

It wouldn't be any different than the 8th-seeded Los Angeles Kings knocking off the #1, #2 and #3 seeded teams to reach the finals and win the Stanley Cup. |

Hmm...
East: ATL - 4 teams NOR - 5 teams SOU - 5 teams
West: MTN - 4 teams PAC - 5 teams
14 vs 9 is odd. Given that they said they were capping at 26, I think we might a staggered playoff format, where it changes over the next year or two, as they fill out that 26.
Personally, I would like to see the following this year, assuming no more teams are added:
12 teams make the playoffs: 7 from the east, 5 from the west.
Top 2 teams from each conference get a bye, and are assigned the #1 and #2 seeds, on their side of the bracket, respectively.
#4 and #5 from each conference play each other in a play-in to take on the #1 seed from each conference.
#3 in the West plays #7 in the East in the play-in to take on the #2 seed in the West.
#3 in the East plays #6 in the East in the play-in to take on the #3 seed in the East.
Sort of like american football playoffs, but the #7 seed from the East replaces the #6 seed from the West, or something similar (maybe put in a stipulation that assumes the East #7 seed has more points than the West #6 seed, or something like that). |
