CINCINNATI , Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that second-year defenseman Andrew Hotham has agreed to terms with the Cyclones for the 2012-13 season.

Hotham (HAW-thum) will embark on his second full season as a professional after a stellar rookie campaign with the Wheeling Nailers in 2011-12. A year ago, he notched 44 points (8 goals, 36 assists) in 52 games – finishing fourth on the Nailers in overall scoring and second among rookies. His statistics were recognized after the season, as Hotham was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team after finishing sixth among all first-year rear guards in points. The 25-year-old also saw action in four Kelly Cup Playoff games this past spring and collected four points (2 goals, 2 assists) during that span.

“Andrew is one of the most talented defenseman in our league,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “His strength and skill in all three zones makes him a highly sought after player. We’re very fortunate to have a talent like him in our locker room.”

Prior to going pro, the Barrie, Ontario native was a four-year letter winner at St. Mary’s University where he amassed 148 points (34 goals, 114 assists) in 109 career games. While in college, Hotham was recognized on several occasions for his impressive play; he was named the CIS (Canadian NCAA) First Team in each of his final three seasons, won the CIS League MVP and Defenseman of the Year accolades in 2010-11. In his junior year, he helped lead St. Mary’s to the CIS Championship.

The countdown to the 2012-13 season is officially underway! On Saturday, October 13, the Cyclones will host the second-annual Power Play 5K Run/Walk followed by the 2012 First Face-Off against the Wheeling Nailers at U.S. Bank Arena. Registration for the race is open NOW on CyclonesHockey.com. Don’t forget the Cyclones will host an exhibition game at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, October 5 at 7:30pm with tickets available for just $5! An interesting note that was missed in the Cyclones press release: The signing of Hotham gives the Cyclones two players whose fathers' played for the Cincinnati Tigers of the Central Hockey League in 1981-82.

Hotham's father, Greg Hotham, was leading the CHL in scoring among defensemen with 43 points (10 goals, 33 assists) in 46 games for the Tigers when he was traded by the parent Toronto Maple Leafs to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for future considerations.

Mathieu Aubin's father, Normand Aubin, was the other player whose father wore a Tigers uniform.

Donnie, that's really interesting. I love obscure statistics/facts like that. Especially interesting since the Tigers were around such a short period of time. Thank you for sharing.
