CINCINNATI, Ohio – A four goal outburst by the Fort Wayne Komets (18-15-1-1) proved to be too much for the Cincinnati Cyclones (20-11-2-0) to overcome as the visiting club earned a 5-4 win in front of a regular season record crowd of 12,228 at U.S. Bank Arena on Throwback Night and Teddy Bear Toss Night.

Tons of plush covered the ice early in the contest as the Cyclones struck just 4:17 into the game, sparking the shower of donations. Garret Wilson connected with a pass to Andrew Conboy as he was streaking into the slot and Conboy buried it past Kenny Reiter (W, 20 saves, 9-6-0) lighting the lamp to put the Cyclones up 1-0. The Komets evened things at one goal apiece at the 7:42 mark when Cincinnati net minder Brian Foster (L, 26 saves, 13-5-2) misplayed a puck behind his own net, allowing J.M. Rizk to deposit his 14th goal of the season. With only 1:38 left in the first period, the Cyclones regained a one-goal advantage on a power play opportunity. Garret Wilson picked up his second assist on the night when he sent a pass from behind the goal to Taylor Ellington who slapped a one-timer by Reiter for his first goal in a Cyclones jersey. Jarrod Skalde’s team remained ahead 2-1 as time expired for the opening 20 minutes.

The Cyclones pushed their lead to 3-1 shortly after the teams took to the ice for the middle frame. At 2:35, David Pacan split the Fort Wayne defensemen and beat Reiter on a breakaway short-handed goal. The Komets would answer back, though, with a Brandon Marino tally less than a minute later to cut the deficit to one. Fort Wayne rear guard Nick Schaus followed with the game-tying strike on a shorthanded breakaway goal of his own with 6:52 gone. The teams stayed deadlocked at three at the second intermission.

Fort Wayne got their first lead of the night just 1:39 into the final stanza when Hoban knocked in a rebound from the bottom of the right circle. Then, at the 4:41 mark, the Komets extended their cushion to 5-3 on a tap in by Matt Firman off a rebound left over from a point blast. The Cyclones fought back hard as Mike Pelech brought the home team to within one goal at 14:04 – as he batted in his third of the year. But despite several late attempts to tie the game, Cincinnati was unable to pot the equalizer and fell by the 5-4 final score.

The Cyclones Radio Network Stars of the Game are as follows:

First Star: Mike Hoban (1 goal, 1 assist for Fort Wayne)
Second Star: J.M. Rizk (1 goal, 2 assists for Fort Wayne)
Third Star: David Pacan (1 goal, 1 assist for Cincinnati)

The Cyclones will close out their three-game weekend tomorrow evening when they visit the Evansville IceMen at 6:00pm ET. Fans can hear the action of the game from the Ford Center on the Cyclones Radio Network (FM 100 The FAN, America One, CyclonesHockey.com) beginning at 5:40pm.

The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday, January 9 when they play host to the Orlando Solar Bears for the first time this season.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

A lethargic game played in front of a huge crowd.

Great coverage from the Enquirer. Not even a box score. Apparently they were over at the NKU mens home opener which had 2800 people in attendance. Great picture, though.

I sent the following email today to Angel Rodriguez, the Enquirer sports editor, at arodriguez@enquirer.com. If this strikes a cord with you, feel free to send him your own thoughts.

Subject: Record Attendance

At the same time that the Bengals game was winding down Saturday night, the first place Cincinnati Cyclones were drawing a record regular season crowd of 12,228 at USBA. (Wonder what it would have been had they not had the competition of the Bengals.) The next morning page C6 of the Enquirer had a long article and picture about the UC basketball game that drew 8,142, and page C7 had a long article and picture about the NKU basketball game that drew 2,788. Even page C5 had coverage of 13 girl high school basketball games. All of this coverage was warranted and appreciated, but the complete continuing blackout of all Cyclone news by the Enquirer is both poor journalism and a direct insult to your many readers who are interested in the Cyclones specifically and all Cincinnati sports in general. Well done

If I lived in Ft. Wayne I would be looking for any reason to get out of there for a few hours too.

When interest instead of promotion is what drives attendance, then the team will begin to get more attention from the news media. It is what it is.

Not only was last night's turnout a record crowd for the Cyclones, it was one of the largest crowds ever for a pro hockey game in the arena's 37-year history. The WHA Cyclones had a few crowds that were bigger, but not many.

Hard to believe USBA is now 37 years old. The Gardens was only four years older (41) when the Cyclones debuted in 1990.

The Enquirer doesn't write the stories, they rely on people in the media departments of local sports teams and organizations to send them the stories, and the newspaper isn't going to allow editors any significant time to try to edit stories down to fit the space it gives to each team. If cloneinator's recap is what the Cyclones sent to the Enquirer, I'm guessing it's too long and would take up more space than the paper cares to dedicate to this event. If I were the PR person for the Cyclones, at the beginning of each season I would call the sports editor at the paper and find out what it would take to get my coverage of games into the paper each day, and try to tailor my stories to the space the paper is willing to give me.

When you are a PR person for a team, venue or company, every day is like being the quarterback of a football team and walking up to the line of scrimmage, reading the defense, and taking what they're giving you.

Regarding the level of play on Saturday, their defense was abysmal. They can't/won't backcheck and hardly ever cover the points. On Ft. Wayne's fourth goal, all 5 Cyclone skaters were below the faceoff dots. Cover the points and you just might cut down on SOG.

A few years ago the Enquirer had a short piece on every game taken from the Cyclone Game release. Sometimes just one para sometimes two but at least they printed it. They would also have occasional articles about team or players. This year: natta

No excuse for Enquirer. Look at all of the national wire service stories they edit and print. Go to any hometown paper of any other ECHL team and you will find coverage of their team. This is the link to the Fort Wayne article about last nights game. http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20130106/SPORTS06/301069910/1210/SPORTS06

This is the article from the Evansville paper about Friday's game. Notice both are not taken from the team game press release. http://www.courierpress.com/news/2013/jan/04/icemen-score-four-times-second-period-knock-orland/

Don't know if it is because the Cyclones pulled their advertising from the paper or what but the Enquirer is plain wrong by not giving some kind of coverage to a first place team that draws 12, 282 to USBA at the same time the beloved Bengals are playing in a playoff game

I'm sure politics has something to do with it. Pulling advertising from the local rag doesn't exactly make them want to do any favors for the team. But let's get real. The big crowd didn't have anything to do with the team's record or success. $8 tickets, dollar beers, hot dogs and sodas, encouraging people to throw stuff on the ice and feel good about it, and dressing the team in uniforms that make some older fans feel like they've time traveled back to the time when hockey was at its highest popularity in this city, was the perfect storm of promotions by the Cyclones organization to get that many people in the door. I'm sure the normal crowd of about 2000-3000 will be back for Wednesday night's tilt.

Plus, ECHL hockey is the highest level of sports in cities like Fort Wayne and Evansville. The newspapers in those cities probably still have beat writers dedicated to those teams, something the Cyclones had back in the '90s when Bob Queenan covered the team for the Enquirer and Randy Oppenheimer was there from the Post. With dwindling profits and readership, the Enquirer hasn't had a dedicated beat writer for the Cyclones since 1998.

Never asked for a beat writer or front page space or six paragraph articles. Just a paragraph from the team game release somewhere in the sports section. They use to do that every game. In todays paper there was a paragraph on the two Miami players on the US Junior World Gold Medal team and a paragraph on the NHL strike. Do you really think the team shouldn't at least get as much mention in the Enquirer as those two stories or a high school girls basketball game in Brown County? There are a lot of hockey fans in this area who want to see hockey stay here and succeed and the Enquirer does not even recognize that we exist.

Sorry that you think the city is too "big league" for an ECHL team to even be recognized by the local paper. Do you think an AHL team would be worthy of coverage? At least the local TV stations recognize the team with scores and especially on the Sunday night shows where they even have coaches and players on at times.

If memory serves the Enquirier's coverage of the Mighty Ducks of 04-05 was pretty poor as well.

I didn't say this city is too big league for the ECHL team to be recognized by the local paper. I simply said that the paper doesn't have a beat writer to cover the team, and hasn't had one in 15 years. Even if it were an AHL team, it would face the same challenges. It's up to the team to provide short, concise, well written, and convenient blurbs for the paper to print. And under the paper's printing deadline. I don't know the specific reason why the paper has apparently cut down on Cyclones coverage, but my guess is that it's one, or any combination, of those reasons.

The Ducks didn't have great coverage, but there was a recap in the Enquirer from every game during the 2004-05 season, along with mentions when there were player transactions and some other team news and notes. There were also a couple front page features in the Sunday paper that season including one on Ducks' captain Casey Hankinson.

I have a book that I kept from each of the eight seasons the Ducks played that has every mention of the team in print. The team never got shut out. Games with later starting times in places like Houston, San Antonio and Utah might not have made the first or second edition, but they always made final edition.

Earlier this season, the Cyclones had a potential front page story when they had both Aubin and Hotham. Their fathers had played together with the CHL Cincinnati Tigers in 1981-82. I can think of at least two reporters at the Enquirer that would have found that to be an interesting story. When Terry Ficorelli returned to town for the first time in 17 years as the broadcaster for Evansville, that was a newsworthy story that some of the media would have picked up on. The story opportunities have been there. It's on the team to make those stories happen.

The Cyclones have done a good job getting on news shows to talk about things like Throwback Night and some of the other things they have going on. I also like what Nick Brunker does on FB and Twitter. He does one of the better jobs with social media in minor pro hockey.
