| Former Cyclones center Cory Conacher is leading the rookie scoring race in the NHL. He's 5-foot-8 but playing like he's 6-foot-4. Always in the high traffic areas. |

| It's a miracle he ever made it to the NHL without buying a ticket. After all, he's small and wasn't drafted. |

There is a difference between being undrafted coming out of major junior hockey and Division I college hockey. A lot of the undrafted college players that are signed by NHL teams would have been drafted in the early rounds had they been draft eligible their junior and senior years, such as former Cincinnati Mighty Ducks Chris Kunitz, Andy McDonald and Dustin Penner.
Most of the undrafted guys coming out of major junior hockey that make it in the NHL are fourth line grinder type players like former Cincinnati Mighty Duck Zenon Konopka or a defenseman. David Desharnais is one of the few skill guys that ends up making it after being passed over in the draft.
If the draft were pushed back to age 20 like it used to be before the WHA forced the NHL to move the age to 18, Desharnais might have been a third or fourth-round pick. At 18, because of his size, NHL teams weren't going to burn a pick on him.
Drafting players at 18 and then having to make a decision on signing them before they're 20 has cost NHL teams millions of dollars in mistakes. There weren't as many mistakes in the draft when players were drafted as they were turning 20.
Former Cyclones right wing Jeff Hereema was a first-round pick by Carolina. Had he entered the draft at 20, he would have been a fifth or sixth-round pick. Nikos Tselios. Same thing.

| Nice to see that David is centering the first line in Montreal this year. Can still see some of the passes he made in his time here |

He's centering the first line because Montreal doesn't have a legit No. 1 center. If the Anaheim Ducks decide to trade former Cincinnati Mighty Duck Ryan Getzlaf (he'll be a free agent July 1), Montreal will be among the many teams interested and he'd bump Desharnais off the first line.
Desharnais has played well but the Canadiens have been shopping for an upgrade for the first line with Desharnais better suited to play on the second line (he'd still be on the first power play unit and would be on a lot of teams). |
