This could have been the closest to a perfect hockey night this season. 1. Great crowd 2. Solid goal tending 3. Solid defense 4. Under control play the entire game 5. Great design of a "special" jersey. Just enough pink to make the point without making the players foolish looking. 6. Enough offense to win. Kinda hurt we couldn't get an empty netter at the end, but to do so you sometimes have to take big chances and that can cost you the other way. Seemed the idea last night was play defense first and go for the empty second !

| 6. Yep- but.... how cool would it have been for Hauser to score an empty netter! How many teams have 2 goalies score in one season. |

I can also add another point: 7. Seeing Captain Aubin step up late in the third to come to the aid of one of his teammates in a fight setting. For years he has been the one getting the help and it was great seeing him take the role himself. |

7k is about the largest crowd I like to deal with, the building just isn't suited for more than that. I'm just glad they were able to pull off a solid win. Let's face it, the record in front of big crowds isn't exactly stellar. Hopefully a chunk of those people were casual attendees and they're now on the hook for a few more games.
I knew Houser was going for goal as soon as he stopped that puck. Unfortunately he didn't get it on net. Now that would have been a goalie actually scoring a goal, not the fluke that was Foster getting credit for one off of a Trenton gaff. (For the record, the Trenton "own goal" ranks right up there with Chad Starling's goal off the glass and Aubin's goal off a dump and change shot from center ice, the fact it got credited to a goalie makes it that much more entertaining.) |

That was a great night of hockey and entertainment. Houser looked great! He was very calm under fire and made some crucial saves when he had to. A very nice outing for him.
I also have to give credit where credit is due. With more than 7,900 people there last night, I thought the crowd was very well-managed. Perhaps the USBA/Cyclone staff is figuring it out.
And you have to give it up for the very pink ice installed by the ice crew. Plus, the pink fire engine was a nice touch. |

I think it might be more due to the kind of casual fan who attends a "Pink in the Rink" night than anything else.

Houser looked like a solid guy to take into the playoffs last night. He gave up a few big rebounds but all in all he made some quality saves and stopped everything he had a reasonable chance of stopping. Take out one nap on defense and he gets a shutout. If we have him and Foster in goal at the end of next month we are in good shape.
Wheeling generally looked outmatched last night and the Cyclones could have easily put 5+ on the board if not for a couple of misses. If there is a negative that is it. Wheeling still had a shot late in the game and they shouldn't have.
Also loved the play of the Embach, Conboy Linstrom line. Those guys were a nightmare for Wheeling last night.
Finally, the "Stealth Turtle" of the year award goes to Mr. Merth. To the casual observer he kind of looked like he was going with Conboy, but what he was really doing was a masterful game of keeping his head out of danger while not actually throwing very many (if any) punches. Looked like Conboy eventually got frustrated and went to the kidneys, which in this situation was OK by me. Merth gets an A for being a captain and dropping them when his team needed a lift, but the rest of the grade is an incomplete.
