Former Cincinnati Mighty Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf has agreed to terms on an eight-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks. The deal is worth $66 million, or an average of $8.25 million per season.
Getzlaf, who joined the now-defunct Cincinnati team at the end of the 2004-05 season, has gone on to become one of the top players in the world. He enters Anaheim's game tonight against Calgary with 499 career NHL points. |

I mentioned he joined the Ducks at the end of the 2004-05 season. He was just 19 years old when he joined the Ducks, and was one of the team's best players in the postseason. Performance isn't measured by the stats you can pull up on hockeydb.
He was terrific on faceoffs, killed penalties, and won a lot of battles for the puck along the wall and corners for the Ducks in the playoffs and could have had another five or six points if one of his linemates (Stanislav Chistov) would have been able to finish. He didn't get to play with the team's two best goal-scorers, Chris Kunitz and Joffrey Lupul. They were with Zenon Konopka.
One thing for certain: There has never been a player that has worn a Cyclones uniform that has gone on to become as good a player as Getzlaf is. He is tracking towards a Hall of Fame career.
I have the stick Getzlaf used when he scored his first pro goal with the Ducks. I also have the pucks from the first-ever Cyclones goal by Mike Chighisola in 1990, and the first IHL goal by David Latta in 1992.
I was going to donate these items to the Cincinnati Hockey Hall of Fame, but it never became what it had the opportunity to be.
Perhaps some day the Cyclones will create their own Hall of Fame at US Bank Arena. I think fans would enjoy seeing things like the original game-worn jerseys on display, and other artifacts from the 20-plus years the Cyclones brand has been around. |

Gee- calling him a Cincinnati Mighty Duck is like calling Jim Carey a Cincinnati Cyclone. |

Former Cincinnati Mighty Ducks right wing Pierre Parenteau played three games in the ECHL for conditioning purposes in 2005-06 when he was coming back from an injury, and the league touts him as one of its graduates to the NHL.

So to these standards you must admit that Cedrick Desjardins is an NHL alumni since he played for Tampa Bay ! I try to classify a player if he played enough that it helped his career. Do you count "EBUG's" who never get in a game at the ECHL level as an ECHL player? If so Wildman Walker's son is an ECHL alumni ! |

Desjardins' name will appear in the NHL All-Time player registry since he has appeared in at least one game (he now has three following a 4-3 loss tonight vs. Montreal).
EBUG would only count as an ECHL player if they appeared in a game. Former ECHL Cyclones equipment manager Steve Benoit played in the closing minutes of a game against Winson-Salem in 1990-91, so he would count as having played in the league. Benoit made a big save on Gretzky in the game ... Keith Gretzky.
The unfortunate thing about the lower level leagues like the ECHL is if the EBUG had to play and it cost the team a game, it could also cost them things like home ice advantage in the playoffs, or even qualifying for the playoffs. But it's also one of the interesting things about the league. |
