The Cyclones can do no worse than a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference for the Kelly Cup playoffs. The Cyclones will lock up a spot in the playoffs by earning a point in any of their final games, or any result by the Kalamazoo Wings other than a win during the stretch of their schedule.

Let's go Cyclones!!!

Jarrod Skalde has to be a strong candidate for ECHL Coach of the Year.

I would think so, but Alaska.....again is having a great year, but being out last year and a great bounce back year should help Jarrod this year, he did a great job along with Matt

I would have to agree. Skalde should definitely get some consideration for coach of the year, particularly if they hold onto first place.

This is an amazing run that reminds me a little bit of 07-08 where they had the amazing February.

Just doing some research (not to rain on the parade) but over the last 18 games in which the 'Clones have gone 14 - 4 they've only played 4 of those against teams who are (as of today) qualified to make the playoffs.

Voting for awards has already started. I would be shocked if he does not have several votes already.

You're not raining on my parade, cooper. Winning against non-playoff teams is what a playoff team should be doing on a regular basis. Win the games you're supposed to, as they say.

My hat is off to Skalde. You have to give him a lot of credit for this great season.

I wouldn't give ALL the credit to Skalde. It also has to do with Macker & the team. We can't have Skalde getting a bigger ego than he already has.

Hockey is life. All the rest is just small stuff.

The Western Conference playoff format is a joke with 8 of nine teams qualifying. Seven teams have already been selected and there are still 8-10 games left. I think last year the eastern conference had 4-5 teams on the bubble going into the last weekend and it looks like a similar race this year. Bakersfield is the 9th team and has been since the beginning of the year. Not sure how you stay motivated in a system like that

I read the playoff format page on the ECHL site the other day and it appears that all 8 qualifying Western teams play the first round now. 1 vs 8 and so on.

If you recall, the 2010 Cyclone team had to play an entirely extra round than Idaho did due that bogus "first place bye" rule.

The system used to be #1 and #2 seeds got a first round bye, and 3-8 played the first round and then were re-seeded in the second round. You can't do a playoff with an odd number of teams, because someone would have no one to play, unless you had a play-in game between #7 and #8.
