I know nothing about our new coach. What is the way he coaches? Does he like finesse like Weber, or does he like big and tough like Skalde? Is he about the defensive game, and fighting or does he want lots of goals without taking penalties? I can't wait for the first game, and am very anxious to see what happens. |

Thanks but that doesn't help since I don't have speakers on my computer anymore thanks to my kid, but since I can't get an answer on a message board that usually is great at answering questions in a written format I will just wait until the first game, and keep my eyes open. |

Best that I can recall of the hiring presser, Simon promised a "hard working" (what coach doesn't ) and "fast" team. He emphasized speed quite a bit.
Given that Simon was a role player in his career, I look forward to the development of speedster Josh Birkholz under his guidance. |

We hear plenty of things from new coaches on what they will do and sometimes it even works out. From Coach Simon all I ask is a hockey team that gives us a 60 minute effort each night and a team that doesn't show up on the police blotters or the ECHL blotter for bad actions on and off the ice. The other thing I ask is if someone does not want to play to the level you demand, you step up and introduce them to the bench until their attitude changes.

Ben Simon was a good defensive forward and penalty killer during his pro career. He had to play that way to survive. Because of the way he understood the game as a player, I would look for him to be a coach that teaches young players the essential parts of the game which as the season progresses will lead to solid positional and special teams play.
From what I knew about him as a player, I believe he'll become a good head coach. |

Well said DH. The point on "teaches young players the essential parts of the game" is a key to an ECHL player moving up.

Article from ECHL site on coach Simon: http://www.echl.com/behind-the-echl-benches-ben-simon-cincinnati-cyclones-p187533 Behind the ECHL Benches - Ben Simon, Cincinnati Cyclones October 1, 2013
Ben Simon was named the seventh head coach in Cyclones’ club history on July 25, 2013. Simon, a 1997 fifth-round pick (110th overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks, comes to the Queen City after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League.
Prior to joining the IceHogs, Simon served as both a player and head coach for the Sheffield Steelers of the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League, guiding the club to the 2010-11 EIHL title and finishing that season with 66 points (27g-39a) in 62 games. During his 11-year playing career, Simon logged a total of 770 professional contests in the International Hockey League, ECHL, AHL, NHL and overseas. Simon notched four points (3g-1a) and 47 penalty minutes in 81 career NHL regular-season tilts over parts of four seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers (2001-04) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2004-05). Upon his retirement after the 2010-11 campaign, he had accumulated 306 career points (125g-181a) during regular season play and another 28 points (14g-14a) in postseason action.
A University of Notre Dame alumnus, Simon was a part of three championship teams during his professional career; in addition to his EIHL accolades from 2010-11, he, along with former Cyclones head coaches Jarrod Skalde and Chuck Weber, helped lead the Orlando Solar Bears to the 2001 Turner Cup title. A year later, in 2002, he was a member of the Chicago Wolves when they captured the Calder Cup championship.
Simon and his wife, Beth, have two daughters – nine-year-old Meg and six-year-old Kate. He is the first-ever Ohio native to lead the Cyclones behind the bench. |
