From USA TODAY:
Former Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov is back in hockey. Not in the National Hockey League, not the American Hockey League either.
"Bryz" signed a tryout agreement with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL. Some teams in the league have affiliations with the AHL and NHL, but Las Vegas is completely independent.
"Having a world-class player like Ilya in camp is a great opportunity for our organization and our players," Wranglers coach and general manager Mike Madill said in a news release. "Operating independently of an NHL affiliation allows us the freedom to explore these types of opportunities, and we are thrilled to have Ilya here to work with us, and our goaltenders especially. It will be an amazing experience for them."
I don't know what to think about this. Is he going/allowed to play for them, or is he only practicing with them until he gets an offer? If he is going to play, do the Wranglers have a direct line to the Kelly Cup? Is this at all fair for the rest of the Western Conference? Or is this just for exposure for a team who went out in the first round last year? |

One thing you need to know about Las Vegas is the owner knows the value of promotions. Being in Vegas, minor league sports have to earn every fan they get. We might be at their game Sunday the 13th so I'll let you know if he is still in playing shape ! If nothing else, Bryzgalov gets a chance to showcase he still can play and if so, maybe a NHL team "buys" him off Vegas and they make a quick buck !Don't forget we once had a former top notch goalie on our team- Jim Carey. What a disaster that was. |

There isn't a team in the NHL that questions if Ilya Bryzgalov can still play. They question whether they'd want him on their team. He's not been a good teammate anywhere he's been.
If an NHL team wanted to sign him, they wouldn't have to give Las Vegas anything in exchange. NHL teams can sign anyone playing on an ECHL contract with no compensation due to the ECHL team. |

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that a signed ECHL contract locked you in to that team unless released. Why then do they say "purchased the contract" when talking about a move from the lower ranks to a higher rank ? |

No sign of "Bryz" at their Sunday preseason game. Know it was "pre" but western hockey is so much lighter hitting than eastern ECHL hockey. Love the Vegas style attendance count. Announced 3700 must have been an eyeball count. Orleans Arena is a perfect size for most ECHL teams. Layout a lot like old Dayton Nutter site with one end only w/ fans. Large crowd could really be loud in there! |

He was just in camp to stay in shape with no intention of signing with Las Vegas. He returned to his New Jersey home to wait for the phone to ring from an NHL team.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up in Edmonton or Calgary. |
