I see it's official- two 5-team divisions and one 3-team division ! Does Wheeling, Reading or Elmira get to hang a banner for winning the Atlantic division ? Does their leader at the end get an automatic slot in the playoffs ? I know we could have found ourselves in their division but we use to make fun of the west for just this type of alignment. Now seeing it, I almost feel we should be over there and now would be one 5-team and two 4-team divisions in the east.By the way, Wheeling is now their leader with a 1-0 record. Get that banner ready ! Taking a closer look at the Wheeling game over Elmira, old hand Christiaan Minella was the star of the game w/ two goals ! http://www.echl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=10602 |

Technically Toledo is farther east then we are! They should've been moved. :)
Toledo's longitude and latitude.
41.6656° N, 83.5753° W
Cincinnati's longitude and latitude
39.1000° N, 84.5167° W
Toledo is almost a full degree farther east than Cincinnati.
In all seriousness I wish they would have just made the eastern conference more balanced. I also don't see any areas in the east that would support the ECHL.

You could also do a Northern w/ Kalamazoo, Toledo, Reading and Elmira and a central with Evansville, Fort Wayne, Cincinnati and Wheeling. |

I like that idea... the only thing i see wrong is that perhaps you would be taking away games against Toledo... but we play enough games against them maybe taking some away will help us appreciate the rivalry more |

The playoff format is different this year; no top seeds for the division winners, the top 8 get in and are seeded according to their point totals.
Also, why try to get creative with 3 division? The easy solution would have been to fold the Atlantic Division and make the East a 2 division conference. |

Thanks Elvis, bring up a question and most times you get a friendly answer ! Your idea though could mean Evansville and ourselves heading south. EEK !!! |

I would think that Cincinnati would fight any move to the South Division with every fiber of their being. I have reasons:
1. Constant 10 hour bus rides are a nightmare, not just on team travel budgets but also the physical toll it takes on a player. Ask the Grambling football team.
2. I think fans would be irate with trading in perfectly good, economically sound, fan friendly rivalries like pretty much the entire North Division. We are four hours, just about, from every team in the division, and five to get to Wheeling.
3. I cite the structure up until the ECHL stopped just placing teams in lopsided divisions, around the 2009-10 season. To South Carolina's credit, they played pretty much a playoff all their own and by the time they met the Cyclones, who only had to win two playoff rounds to the Stingrays' three, in the 2008 American Conference final, they were pretty much spent. Merging Atlantic and North sounds better at an 8 team division. Realistically, though, it would not. The ECHL would have to find three southern owners to form teams or convince SPHL teams, say, to join a South division.
My favorite thought, and this is just a thought... would be to find three Western owners and make it 13-13, then just have two conferences and even the schedule a little... six games against each team
Just thinking of ways we can balance things out... for entertainment purposes only :) |

Very peculiar move by the ECHL. With this new format, it renders divisions in the Eastern Conference virtually useless. Based on this format, there is no incentive or reward for winning your division. Seems kind of odd to even have divisions if they're rendered meaningless. It's especially odd since division winners in the Western Conference get the top two seeds. Here's a link to the ECHL media relations release explaining it for anyone who's interested.

I'm liking my four Northern ,four central (w/ Evansville,Fort Wayne, Cincinnati and Wheeling) and five Southern more and more. Even better w/ Indianapolis or Dayton added to the Central and maybe Youngstown or Erie for the Northern division ! |

I think it's all been done as a stop gap in hopes that Trenton or J-town would perhaps return and balance things out. There's also been talk of Atlantic City bringing a team back as well. Regardless, something had to be done ans just offering the playoff positions to the top 8 is the easiest. The only other idea I had was to continue offering top seeds to division winners but if a non division winning team from the North or South had more points than Atlantic division winner, that team would take the seed. It seems the League choose the KISS method and kept it simple. |

Also, don't forget the rumblings that have been going on for years about the AHL setting up a true "western" division. If that were to actually happen, it might open up a couple of new eastern cities for the ECHL. |
