Hey Guys,

Putting together a list of 10 historic games that Cincinnati hockey clubs were involved with. Win or lose. Thought I'd prod some of you for any suggestions. Below are a handful of games that come to mind. Just brainstorming.

thx

01. 05-15-1972 - Swords win Calder Cup.
02. 04-09-1977 - Stingers/Racers play triple OT in game one of playoffs.
03. 12-12-1978 - Wayne Gretzky scores his first major league hat trick. Game was a Stinger loss against the Oilers.
04. 06-05-2008 - Cyclones win first cup since Swords.

Mark Popovic's game-winning goal for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks with 13 seconds left in the third period in Game 7 against the Milwaukee Admirals at the Bradley Center in the opening round of the 2005 Calder Cup playoffs has to be on the list. Coming in a Game 7, it's the most dramatic win by a Cincinnati professional hockey team.

The Mighty Ducks last game, a playoff loss to the Chicago Wolves in 2005, because as the team skated off the ice it marked the last time fans in this town would see that caliber of hockey.

The IHL Cyclones game in Atlanta during the 1994-95 season when head coach Don Jackson scaled the glass and punched the mascot has to be on the list.

October 23,1975, the first "major league" regular-season home game in Cincinnati hockey history when the WHA Stingers, behind a pair of goals by Rick Dudley and a four-point night by Bryan Campbell, defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 6-4, at Riverfront Coliseum.

The 1990-91 ECHL Cyclones first game against the Roanoke Valley Rebels is significant because it marked the return of pro hockey after a nine-year sabbatical (I have the puck from the first goal scored by Mike Chighisola).

The Cincinnati RailRaiders first AHL game in 2006-07 ... oh wait. :)

I thought about that Ducks game. Cincinnati was down 3 games to 1 and came back in thrilling fashion. Probably a keeper if I can find newspaper coverage on the game. I'm writing individual articles on each game for a project. However, I do have the full game on video if I can't find anything in the print media.

The first cyclones game from the original club is a good one as well. Important because it was return of hockey in Cincinnati.

The 1994-95 game probably not. Looking for games of importance, not games with a crazy incident that happened during it.

Gonna include the game where the 'hawks clinched their first Turner Cup and would love to find an historic game on the Tigers. will probably dig through my articles to try and find one. Maybe the game where the Tigers scored their 355th goal of the season which passed the 1976-77 Stingers club for the most goals by a Cincinnati hockey team in a single season

thanks for the suggestions

If the Ducks game isn't in the top 10 you shouldn't even have the list. I have the article from both the Enquirer and the Milwaukee paper. In fact, I have print articles from every game the Ducks played during their eight-year history. Towards the end the Enquirer was primarily a two or three paragraph summary but in the playoffs they always had a stringer cover the games.

A memorable Tigers moment would also be when both goalies, Bob Parent and Curt Ridley, got hurt and they had to play a guy they brought in from an industrial league in Ontario, Doug Dragasevich, who was just supposed to back up for one game. The Tigers won, 2-1, and Dragasevich was never heard from again. It was his one and only professional hockey appearance.

Actually i just though about that one with Doug Dragasevich. That game was played on Nov. 29th 1981. Added it already to my rough list. probably the first Mohawks game as well. First pro hockey game ever for Cincinnati.

The game where the Tigers scored their 355 goal was a 7-2 loss to Oklahoma City.

That Ducks game is a keeper. Maybe a Firebirds and RailRaiders game as well.

The Firebirds franchise still exists today, as the Wheeling Nailers.

The Cyclones Game 7 loss to the Orlando Solar Bears at Cincinnati Gardens in 1996. Bad bounce off the boards cost them the series.

Here's a Game 7 summary I wrote of the Ducks 4-3 win at Milwaukee that appeared in the Enquirer and on the AHL website:

For the second year in a row, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks headed into the Bradley Center for a Game 7 Sunday night against the Milwaukee Admirals. Last season, the Mighty Ducks fell behind early and never recovered, their season ending in a 5-1 defeat.

This time would be drastically different out of the gate, as Casey Hankinson, Pierre Parenteau and Kurtis Foster staked Cincinnati to a 3-0 lead, the game barely eight minutes old. But Brandon Segal gave the Admirals some life at the 10:22 mark, and Darren Haydar cut the deficit to 3-2 late in the first period.

In the final minute of the second period, Simon Gamache got his sixth goal and 10th point of the series, tying the score at 3-3.

And on they played, seemingly destined for overtime, a classic ending to what was shaping up as a classic series. But Mark Popovic floated an innocent shot towards the net, through traffic, and past Brian Finley with 12.9 seconds showing on the clock. Just like that, the Mighty Ducks had dethroned the defending Calder Cup champions.

Cincinnati’s Game 7 win was the only one by a road team in the series. They overcame their struggles on the penalty kill, mainly by allowing just five even-strength goals in the seven contests. Joffrey Lupul quietly led the team with eight points; Zenon Konopka had a club-high three goals.

But with 13 different Ducks finding the net at least once, you could take your pick of unlikely heroes: Bryzgalov. Stepp. Rome. Popovic. It was a team effort from start to finish, and has Cincinnati brimming with confidence heading into another daunting challenge – the West Division Final against the first-place Wolves.

A couple of other possibilities for the current ECHL Cyclones to be included on the list:

1)2010 KC clinching win vs. Idaho

2) 2010 seventh game conference finals clincher vs. Reading which culminated a historic comeback from an 0-3 deficit.

Thanks for finally someone including the clinching game with Reading after being down 0-3 in games. All the others are important perhaps in each franchise's history but the Reading game is important in professional hockey history. All the others will and have become distant memories to all except the die hards, but none except this game are in the record book.

Coming back from 0-3 to win the series with Reading definitely belongs in the top 10 most historic games in Cincinnati hockey history.

Here's an oddball possibility for top 10 historic games.

11/10/07 vs. the Augusta Lynx. Early in year 2 of the second year back of this Cyclone ECHL franchise.

I'm not kidding

This was the first "Throwback Night" promotion. It attracted 6430 fans.

Attendance numbers had been down in year in comparison to the first year back from suspension and that took some doing given that the 2006-07 Cyclones averaged around 1800 per game.

The promotion of 11/10/07 featured $6 tickets and $1 food items, maybe even $1 beer-I don't recall.

A month later, the Cyclones changed their pricing policy to a $10 ticket everywhere except for the first row.

Had this night not been attempted or been a success, then the new pricing policy may not have been implemented and the team which now consistently draws 5000 on weekend nights might not even been around and the final chapter of professional hockey in Cincinnati might have been written.

Oh, and the game. The Cyclones lost 4-3 in OT to the Lynx.

Sorry guys. Been away for some time. Hadn't had time to come back in and check. I'll add that game as well to the list. That's a great one.

Right now I tentatively have two games from the third Cyclones club. When they clinched the first Kelly Cup (2007-08)and when they won their 18th straight game (2007-08). Problem is, it may be really tough to find coverage of this incarnation of the Cyclones. I hope I won't be forced to omit games from this club because I can't find coverage.

I at least have the radio broadcast of the first Kelly Cup clincher game. So I could use that. I was at Game 7 in 2010 when they won the conference and TRIED to record that game as well but my computer crashed while I was at the game and lost it....Ohhhhh, I was so angry. I have Game 3, 4, 5 & 6 from that series but not the clincher.
