Keep the interesting content coming, Guido. It sounds like every building has to be in possession of two functional machines for a NCAA event, but the NCAA doesn't have a standardized resurfacing machine/model type they require. Is that correct? |

Right. It would be completely impractical for them to specify a type of machine. New machines cost in the neighborhood of $100,000 and they last for decades if maintained properly. I guess if one of the manufacturers wanted to sponsor the tournament, they could provide machines.
They say the facility "should" have two resurfacers, but they wouldn't likely award games to a place without two. We could, technically, pressed Chitty into emergency service but it would be a stretch. So the plan was to borrow, rent, or otherwise acquire a functional second machine.
I posted a follow-up. I'll just add links to this thread so it posts to the top but doesn't spam the board.

That is an extremely cool example of a rare, vintage Zamboni machine. The Model K was sort of a bridge machine between the original built-on-a-Willy's-jeep model that used the conveyor cups to deposit snow into the tank, and the HD-B machine that uses screw conveyors. Part of why it is so rare is that it was not a great design and they soon perfected the HD-B for production.
This Model-K is in even worse condition than our beloved "Chitty." I should clarify, that while we do not have two fully-functioning machines, and while I would love for us to get there, our Model 520 is in outstanding mechanical condition and "Chitty" could be pressed into emergency service with a half-day's work. So we are not completely out in the cold. Not ideal, but not horrible.
Meanwhile, new Olympia update:

Good stuff, Guido. So, how are you able to completely obscure the Cyclones paint for the NCAA lines and graphics? Do you put on an opaque layer over clear? |

White ice paint. Same stuff that is the regular white base. It is actually a resin, designed to be water soluble, environmentally sound, and have minimal insulating characteristics. Sprayed on the same way as the white and when we do pink, which is mixed in a 100-gallon drum on a wheel cart with a gas powered pump and a reel of hose that goes out to a big brass wand with atomizer misting heads placed at intervals.
The white is just a heavier mix as opposed to the pink that is just a light tint. The same thing is done with white for Disney On Ice. They require all lines, logos, and ads to be covered; they just don't add any lines. It is just a plain white surface. |

Guido - I have a question about the ads on the ice. Seems to me that the overwhelming percentage of fans who see the on-ice ads are at the game as opposed to watching it on TV. That being said, why do all the ads face the same side of the ice? I sit on the penalty box side and get no value out of the ads because they are all upside down from my point of view. Also, it seems to me that there are always more fans on 'my' side of the ice than the bench side of the ice, so the ads seem to all be geared towards a minority of the fans. I'll bet it is camera and TV related, but again, that does not seem to be where most of the target audience is. Any insights? |

It does look odd for the in-game experience; but even though we do not have TV broadcast of the games, we do have local media and sometimes visiting team media set up center-ice on the plaza level behind the benches, so the sponsorship needs to face that. |
