I have an old habit of looking at the ice when an opponent's goal is scored to try and see who was on the ice for us. Lately I have seen a lot of one player skating around with his head down so I looked at the +/- ratings of our defensemen while members of the Cyclones only. Here are number of Cyclone games played and the +/- rating for our most recent defense group: Dalhusisen 18/+11, Aronson 59/+24, Krogh 23/+5, Reed 53/+22, McDonald 60/+7 and Okeefe 25/-1. David's +/- record was a lot better prior to his being teamed up with O'Keefe. For the team with the 2nd highest goal differential to have a full time defenseman in minus territory is not what we need taking full shifts. Remember that +/- ratings are only given for even strength goals. Looked at last nights score sheet from Fort Wayne and sure enough O'Keefe was on the ice for both Fort Wayne even strength goals including the tying goal late in the period. He is often caught out of position, jumps into too many offensive plays in my opinion, and is too small to be effective in front of the net.
I couldn't agree more. I have been watching O'Keefe pretty closely the past couple of weeks and he seems to be ineffective to me too. He was a scratch tonight so, assuming he was a healthy scratch, I guess mgmnt feels the same way. I know that a single statistic is not an ideal way to measure a player, but I am a big fan of plus/minus for defensemen and pts/gm for forwards. I wish the echl website would let me sort on those two stats.
