i just got done watching the bluejackets game and heard a report about a proposed rule change for the overtime periods that was made during the gm meetings that are taking place this week. apparently, one gm proposed to make penalties 1 min instead of 2 min during overtime. the logic, i guess, is a 2 min penalty accounts for roughly 40% of the overtime period, and to put a team on the PK for that long is unfair. according to the report, the proposal was met with favorable response from the other GMs.
this seems pretty stupid to me. an overtime peiod is indeed sudden death but so is the last 5min of regulation (it does happen sometimes, but it is fairly rare for a team to give up the lead in the last 5 min of regulation and then come back to win....they do comeback to tie and force OT, but seeing them comeback for the win is rare), so why should the rules for penalties change just because it's OT. here's a novel idea, only play the players that have the presence of mind to not take stupid penalties. also, what if a player takes a penalty in the last 5 seconds of regulation, does that penalty get cut in half because of overtime? it just doesn't make sense to change the rules. the nfl doesn't change the rules for OT. baseball does not give the batter and extra strike to work with in extra innings. the point of the 4 on 4 OT is to give the players more time and space to create a game winning opportunity. if a team works hard, creates an opportunity and draws a penalty of some sort, they should get a full 2min PP. whats next having a win be worth 3pts (1pt for regulation, 1pt for the OT and 1pt for the shootout in the event of a tie)? |
