Did anyone know the old IHL is back for the '07-'08 Season? There aren't many teams but there are several former Cyclones playing in the league.

Thanks for the information and welcome to the board. Same name but it is far from being the old IHL. Totally different level of play.

Get Clones instead of Clunkers.

The level of play is totally different than it was for the last 15 years of the old IHL but comporable to what it was for the first 30 years of its history. The IHL began to emerge as a Triple-A level league in the mid 1980's after the CHL folded. The CHL was on par with the AHL and the NHL teams that had been developing players in that league needed a place to put their players so they started putting them with IHL teams. St. Louis, Chicago, Minnesota, NY Rangers and NY Islanders were among the first NHL teams to make an IHL team their top development club.

The level of play in the CoHL/UHL/now IHL was on par with the ECHL from the mid 1990's through 2002-03. But since Brian McKenna has taken over as commissioner of the ECHL, that league has become younger and more of a legitimate feeder league for the NHL and now it's not even close. The ECHL is a lot closer to the AHL than the IHL is to the ECHL these days.

The owners of Ft. Wayne; the Frankes; owned the rights to the name of IHL along with the trophies and assorted items. This is likely a ploy to try to resurect the attendance and membership since they are down to just a 6 team league.

It reminds me of the ACHL/WHA2 fiasco down south over the past few seasons.

it was always interesting to watch the call-ups during the IHL days when the ducks were in town. back then the AHL was the young developmental league and the IHL was the veteran league. the first half of the season the ducks would be sending players back and forth to the NHL all the time, then when the playoff run started the call-ups from the AHL would decline and the call-ups from the IHL would increase as teams wanted more seasoned players.

the ECHL of today is nothing like the original ECHL. back in '89 the ECHL was a league of goons and that put people in the seats. over time the league transformed into a developmental league and personally i think that ultimately helps the sport.

some people have posted about the "feminisation" of hockey. i will be the first person to say that fighting belongs in the game. hockey is such a physical game, the players have to be able to police themselves to a certain extent. i, however, am glad that the bench clearing brawls are gone. while they were entertaining, as a fan of the sport, i am thrilled that the new rules allow the skill of these players to shine through.
