Hi Cyclones fans,
My name is Kurt Dusterberg. I am a native Cincinnatian (I grew up in Kenwood) who became a hockey nut while going to Cincinnati Stingers games. Through the years, I have gone to Cyclones games when I return home to visit my folks. I currently live in Raleigh, NC.
I have spent most of my adult life as a TV sportscaster and writer. I recently published a book titled, Journeymen: 24 Bittersweet Tales of Short Major League Sports Careers. There are six hockey players profiled in the book. Two of them -- Dallas Eakins and Fred Knipscheer -- played for the IHL Cyclones. A third player -- Peter Leboutillier -- played for the AHL Mighty Ducks. (I know there is some rivalry between Cyclones and Ducks fans. I'll stay out if it :-) )
All 24 stories are very personal accounts about the struggle to make it to the major leagues. All three Cincinnati hockey players share pivotal stories that occured while they played in the Queen City. I'm confident you will enjoy their insights about playing in Cincinnati, as well as the book in general. Each player deals with heartbreaking moments as well as the thrill of reaching the major leagues. There are also plenty of funny stories. Dallas Eakins shares a story about spending a weekend at Wayne Gretzky's house. Another player explains how he hitchhiked to his first NHL game.
In addition to hockey, the book features six athletes each from baseball, football and basketball. The stories offer rare insights into the inner workings of professional sports, as well as the minds of athletes. Plus, all the players discuss how they moved on after their playing careers ended.
