As a sports, hockey, and Cyclones fan I just want to watch good hockey and have a great time doing it. So I say, "Bring it on!". We know Cincinnati isn't a huge hockey market so having an NHL affiliate so close by can do some great things for the local fan base:
1. Local fans that meet and get to know Cyclones players start to track their favorite Cyclones and hope to see them play at Nationwide Arena. 2. Columbus staff can more easily work with prospects and/or coaches to develop those prospects in the manner the big club needs them molded. 3. Cyclones coaches might likely have more opportunity to use Columbus personnel resources. 4. Possibly greater sponsorships and financial support for player development (equipment/facilities) and marketing from the Blue Jackets to the affiliate in an effort to tap the Cincinnati market. 5. Columbus might start opening it's eyes to the Cinci market and invest in local youth hockey down here too.
I could go on and on about why this would be a good thing, but for the life of me, I can't see this whole "big brother/little brother" belief holding any water.
Based on current affiliation agreements, I can see why this wouldn't happen soon, ..., if ever. But short of personnel or philosophical disagreements, I just can't see why this would be a bad thing.
We basically have a double-A minor league hockey team here in Cincinnati. I don't think there can be any confusion about which team is the "better" team in the two cities. So as long as the NHL Blue Jackets are in Columbus and we have the Cyclones here in Cincinnati, we will always be the "little brother" in hockey. There's just no getting around that so, affiliated or not, we have to accept it.
Having said that though Columbus will _never_ have an NFL, MLB, or NBA team. They did well to get an NHL franchise but the only other top level pro sport they can muster is soccer. So if someone wants to get into a pissing contest over size, there's your ammo.
Columbus Clippers are the AAA Affiliate for the Cleveland Indians!! Milwaukee is the AHL Affiliate of Nashville and Nashville is the AAA Affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, so I dont think it has anything to do with how large a market is quite frankly |

Posted - 08/22/2014 : 09:54:22 AM If you had read my comment Donnie you would have seen I was talking specifically about how fans and not random people would react to a Columbus affiliation. I stand by my comment that Cincinnati fans would have a hard time being comfortable with it as It would make Columbus seem much more of a major league city than Cincinnati is. Given a choice I think any other NHL affiliation would be better received. |

There aren't enough people that care for it to matter who the Cyclones might be affiliated with in the NHL. You could randomly poll 500 people on Fountain Square and maybe 10 could name who the Cyclones were affiliated with. |

Blue Jackets inked an affiliation deal with Kalamazoo today. You better head back to the drawing board with your jersey design. |

First of all, good effort but these uniforms are still abysmal... I dont think the Cyclones would ever switch colors so drastically!
Second of all, I would imagine that if Columbus DID affiliate with Cincinnati, I am sure that Florida and Nashville would have something to say about this... they are the current affiliates and to have a 3rd NHL affiliation is absolutely ludicrous!
Third of all, if a logo change is to be made, I am sure it would be a lot like either the current logo of the return of the hockey mask... I can't wait to see what occurs on the 29th

Posted - 08/05/2014 : 11:25:17 AM Another longshot could be something to do with the rink renovation, but I don't know that they would hold that info and allow a AA minor league hockey team kind of "own" that kind of news. I suppose that anything to generate press for the team in the awful media coverage that is Cincinnati (Special mention to the Enquirer as it's one of the worst daily newspapers in the country that this guy has seen. And that goes for not only hockey coverage but all news.) is a good thing. |

Posted - 08/05/2014 : 11:16:19 AM I've got no inside track on this so it's a complete guess, but i'd say it's a new logo/jersey scheme and possibly an additional affiliation. I know that we're re-signed with Nashville for another year, but who knows, maybe they'll double up. I'd be shocked if it were a league change for 2015-2016, especially a year out, that seems like the least likely of the three big possibilities. I doubt that they'd do something like this for anything more minor like a new mascot. Twister does need a serious bath though if he doesn't get retired, he reeked last season. |

Posted - 08/04/2014 : 6:07:36 PM @gfd28 Those things are hideous. Furthermore, while it seems Evansville's deal with Columbus is up in the air, the Cyclones announced extending their affiliation with Nashville (http://echl.com/cyclones-renew-affiliation-with-nashville-p192546) so unless we're backing out of that deal I'd find it hard to believe the team would sell out to put the CBJ logo on the sleeves. Personally, I think selling out the teams identity to align with the colors and images of a parent club is a little silly. While it makes decent sense from a marketing stand point, from a hockey stand point, the CBJ have never had a lot of depth beyond the AHL level but that could be changing. I've been expecting to see them get deeper for the last few seasons as they've been drafting well, but so far it hasn't come to fruition. |
