Cincinnati's Starling, South Carolina's McNeill
Suspended One Game
May 10, 2008

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL announced that it has suspended Cincinnati defenseman Chad Starling for one game and South Carolina defenseman Grant McNeill for one game as a result of their actions in ECHL Playoff Game R-1 at Cincinnati on May 9.

Starling is suspended under Rule 47.11 after being assessed an instigator penalty in the final five minutes of the game.

McNeill is suspended under Rule 29 Supplemental Discipline.

Starling and McNeill will miss ECHL Playoff Game R-2 at Cincinnati on May 10.

Ridiculous rule, Instigation under 5 minutes to go, had it happened earler in the game he would have been fine. I'm not certain as to why the rule changes under 5 minutes. I suppose the same idiot that made up the automatic icing rule is to blame for this one as well!

the instigation inside 5 minute rule is in place to keep teams that are being blown out from sending out goons to rough up or injure the team that is kicking the crap out of them.

Help me out....Kiser was the player with the game misconduct. Why is McNeill suspended? From our vantage point, Starling didn't start the fight. We probably missed something....

You're right, Chad didn't start the fight, Rory grabbed him first and Chad just decided hey let's go.

Also Kiser was the player that needs to be suspended more than McNeil, but McNeil was taking cheap shots on TJ through the ref over on the side boards, so that may be why.

Elvis, Thanks for explaining the rule, however we were not the team being routed. We should have had immunity!

I got the impression Chad really didnt want to hit Goldielocks..I think Chad usually has huuuge self control...but if I remember correctly, he tried to hit Chad, Chad blocked with his left and clobbered him with his right. I enjoy watching other team members just bouncing off Chad right onto the ice during play action.

McNeill wasn't even listed on the game summary at the 20 minute mark. Makes no sense to me.

Game ending summaries are subject to revision.

Chad started the fight. Rawlyk appeared stunned. Perhaps not the best of buddies dating from last year?

Swanson needs a game and Starling could probably use a day off. If we play anywhere close to last night's level, then Chad's loss won't be significant.

If Syroczynski is even dressed (I'd rather see Maki), then perhaps he could make use of himself by pummeling Kiser. Kiser was a third-rate punching bag when he was in Dayton. He carries himself like he's some "hard a$$" but he ain't. He needs to be placed in his proper place.

This is utter BS. This reminds me of the 2006 Dallas Mavericks-San Antonio Spurs playoff series. Dallas was in the drivers seat 3 games to 1. In Game Five I believe the fight took place in which one of the Dallas players was suspended for game six. Without him, the Spurs won... just another crock of crap from a bunch of cronies looking to bring the big men down!

It's only a shame that I can better prove that the NBA is rigged.... ECHL games are not made for television!

This is old news now that Game 2 is over, but I had a perfect vantage point for this fight. I had the referee directly between me and Chad and what you said is exactly right, but the referee was watching the fight in the corner and he turned just in time to see Chad turn and go to town on Rory. From what he saw it was the right call, but had he looked two seconds earlier and I think Rory gets the instigator, two seconds later and they both just get five.

Thank God that we got the win tonight because it was a rough night for the lines that chad would normally be playing on.

Anyway- when I used to play, if you wait to long between when you first get grabbed and when you either push away or throw a punch, you often get called for the instigation penalty. The mind set is that if you have time to 'think it through' then you might as well have skated away or done nothing.

Had Chad thrown down right off the bat, he might not have gotten that penalty for instigation.

Anyway- it was a great game tonight and I'm glad to see the Clones head to SC with a 2-0 lead in the series! Good hockey played in the 3rd period tonight... thanks to the heckler for letting my boy try on the 'heckler gear.
