Since it was brought up on the ITC board, I'm curious what everyone's opinion is on here:
What if the arena bought the Cyclones so they could keep the name, they run the team for one more year in the ECHL, sell the ECHL franchise and bring in a new WHA franchise?
I'm assuming the idea would be to take advantage of the NHL's labor dispute and create a league that would come close to rivaling the NHL in terms of talent.
Even if it ends up being on par with the IHL...
What do you think?
Is it a possibility? Is it a pipe dream? Would you support it?
That would be one of my fondest dreams and my original thought when I saw the arena management bought the team, especially with the bleak outlook on the NHL CBA.
That is what scares me on the new ECHL. The downfall of the IHL was two reasons- first the overexpansion with too much travel and second putting clubs in NHL cities and pissing them off. The idea of a new league to go head-to-head with the NHL is like the XFL- dead in less than 3 years. I would rather see us pass the time and make our ECHL club strong again and maybe later move to the AHL if the Ducks fail.I still remember the night both the Cyclones and the Ducks drew over 10,000 each on the same night. Hey new management, remember the lower level team should charge LOWER prices for their games or at least make the fans feel they are getting more for their bucks.
Call me a nervous nellie but I'd like to get through this season before we start making plans beyond May 2004 (aka "Cyclones First Championship Season").
i'm hoping the "new" ECHL doesn't IHL their way out of business as well. it scares me w/ the over-expansion. too much travel - too damn costly. i just hope everything works out, but then again, whatever happens, happens. i just want to see some Cyclones hockey no matter what league it is.
