Ok, someone (who knows what they are talking about~lol) needs to explain this safe list business...are these guys promised to us for next season? Or is it that they have a safe spot but they can still accept outside offers? Or something else?

Pretty sure it means if they play in the ECHL next year that they will play in cincinnati... unless they are released by cincinnati.

You are correct that if they play in the ECHL next year they have to sign with us or be released or traded by us. This doesn't prevent anyone in the AHL or even the NHL from taking them however... See JM Daoust's situation this year.

Anyone that is property of Hamilton, Montreal, Milwaukee or Nashville is at their mercy and can be assigned where ever the team chooses (affiliation or not) in the ECHL. Hopefully all our affiliation partners like what we have done and re-up for next season.

Blatently stolen from an article listing Reading's list:

Teams are allowed to protect as many players as they wish provided the players protected meet the guidelines as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players' Association which state that teams shall retain the rights to each player that: (i) signed a Standard Players Contract in 2007-08, and has not been traded or released; OR (ii) signed a Standard Players Contract in 2007-08, and was recalled to the National Hockey League, the American Hockey League or an International Ice Hockey Federation team, and has not been traded or released; OR (iii) received a 2007-08 Qualifying Offer for the current season, and DID NOT sign a Standard Players Contract, and has not been traded or released; OR (iv) has been suspended by the team or League, and has not been traded or released; OR (v) signed a Standard Players Contract on or after the first day of the 2007-08 regular season, then subsequently signed an NHL/AHL contract, and has not been traded or released; OR (vi) has executed the ECHL Retirement Form, and has not been traded or released.

Protected lists may exceed 20 players. Teams must complete all Future Consideration

This first protected list means very little. In a couple weeks they'll announce the teams "season ending roster". That'll be a bit more accurate. The one that really matters though, is the 8 man "protected list" in July. It means those guys have recieved a contract offer from the team, and must sign with the team (if they play in the ECHL). The exception is with veterans. They can still be considered free agents if they don't sign a contract by August 1st.
