During the TV NHL game on 1/18 (Pitsbugh Penguins vs New York Rangers), the annoucers during the first intermission 'faced off' about the NHL considering a ban on fighting, which would/could trickle down to all levels of professional hockey........WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS??
********************
In my opinion if there were better qualified refs with more consistant calls made for the penalties already 'in the books', fighting would decrease on it's own. Standing up for yourself and your teammates when 'things get out of hand' is part of the game. |

you cant ban fighting, if you ban fighting, you lose alot of fans (believe me, i know alot of people who only come to hockey games to watch fighting, and even though they arent real hockey fans, they are still a member of the paying public) |

last night during the blue jackets game it was mentioned that several major junior leagues have put a rule in place to make it illegal to remove their helmets before the fight. this all stems from the player that died recently do to complications from the concussion after hitting his head on the ice after falling during a fight. it was said that the nhl was looking into this rule as well. to me, this is kind of silly. with more and more players wearing visors, punches would quit throwing punches for fear of serious cuts and broken fingers. with such rule in place fights would no longer be fights and be more of dancing/wrestling matches. if linesmen would do a better job of stepping in as the fight winds down players would fall as much. or perhaps a rule to give a minor penalty to the player that meaningfully and purposefully takes a player down to the ice. sure sometimes the players just fall, but i've seem to notice that more and more the "take down" is the goal of some fighters; maybe that's what they should try to ban...
fighting is and has always been a part of the game and it should continue to be. as bags said if they current rules are called consistently, fighting would probably decrease on it's own. with fighting banned i think you'll see "cheap shots" increase just as they did when the put automatic instigator penalty on every guy that started a fight. if i recall correctly the instigator also came with a game misconduct. it made the penalty for fighting too steep in many cases and guys were scared to fight and players starting getting hurt because so called "chippy" players had a free for all. fighting is how the game self-regulates. and as krl said, from a fan prospective there are many people that only attend games for the hitting and fighting.... |

It is a part of hockey's heritage, which is something that shouldn't be taken away. |

Fighting is one of the reasons hockey is what it is. Take it away and risk taking the sport even further out of the mainstream than it already is. I think all leagues should allow fighting under a certain precaution(even College hockey truthfully should allow it) |

The man who died was in a SENIOR league! If you ban fighting, them there will be more cheap shots, more stick swinging and more injuries. FIGHT ON!!!! |

With a ban on fighting i think you'll not just see regular players being hurt but the "superstars" of teams getting taken out. Most guys will think twice before laying a huge hit or cheap shot on a guy like Crosby or Nash for fear of retaliation and having to fight the enforcer. Take that fear away and they'll start gunning for these guys. |

Fighting is banned everywhere besides North America, but I think a lot of the casual interest in hockey is a result of people wanting to see fights... at least in this country. |

Ban fighting? This would do worse to the sport than most would think. As a few of you have said, many fans go (particularly woman/girls) to see men FIGHT, on ice. My gf wasnt a hockey fan before she met me, and actually has taken on a lot of the GAME of hockey and learning, etc, but she gets really excited to see the fights, and I know she would get bored if Justin Johnson wasnt beating on someone or something.
If everyone has forgotten, Hockey is a sport in N. America that has lost a LOT of its backers/fans, and taking away from something as minimal, yet important to the game will just bring the end even quicker. |

Point of information-If you'll notice, Justin Johnson hasn't really been beating on someone or something lately. He's more into playing (fairly well also!) and fighting only when the situation calls for it. He's become one of my favorite players because he's always hustling. The goal he scored this weekend was just beautiful.
And I would also wonder if women more than men go to see the fights. Any opinions, women? |

I love to see a good fight. Hockey is my stress reliever, and a good fight is a great time to yell and get all the stress out. |

I wouldn't say I go to just see the fights. I love hockey and have gotten very involved in the past couple of years. My bf got me into hockey and now I go to every game and I think he's been to about 5 home games (mostly because he works).
But I think every hockey fan loves to see a good fight. Not just any dancing around, hugging each other, type of fight. Everyone gets excited and jumps up hoping your guy will get in the good punches. I like the Justin Johnson, Mike Salekin type of fights, when it's called for. And like someone posted in the other thread, it was awesome watching Ian use his size this weekend, plus score on Friday! |

I love fights, I think they are great for the game and great for the casual fan and the hardcore fan.
i feel that the media almost makes hockey out to be a sport of fighting in a way. If I ever see it on ESPN they do cover the game but they show the fights from games over and over instead of the more important things.
I love to watch TSN over the internet because they actually focus on the game not just the fighting.
But again is fighting goes, a lot of fans will as well. |
