AHL is following NHL outdoors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. The American Hockey League is going outdoors.

The Syracuse Crunch announced on Tuesday that it will host the Binghamton Senators in the Mirabito Outdoor Classic on Feb. 20 at the New York State Fairgrounds. The minor league game will be broadcast live by Time Warner.

The idea was the brainchild of Crunch owner Howard Dolgon and follows the lead of the NHL, which will be holding its third Winter Classic on New Year's Day at Fenway Park. The Philadelphia Flyers will take on the Boston Bruins.

Money for the AHL's first foray outdoors is coming from the Crunch, the Empire State Development Corp., and several area companies. It's expected to have an economic impact of close to a million dollars.

I wonder how many people will show up. I doubt the ECHL will ever do something like this.

I wanted to share this article and thought. What do you think about outdoor games? Should the ECHL have a "Winter Classic"?

Cyclones hockey. A championship caliber team in a city of losers.

Nippert Stadium would be a good place for an outdoor ECHL game.

i agree with donnie, i think nippert would actually be a great venue. the only problem would the weather. i'm not sure that cincinnati's winter is consistant enough to provide for quality, playable ice.

personally i think the only way the echl could pull off an outdoor game is to play it in conjunction with someone elses out door game, much like boston college and boston univeristy will play at fenway this winter.
