Here is an undrafted 5'9" guy who is actually being successful in the NHL. The Anaheim Ducks signed him as a free agent back in April after he led Bowling Green in goals and overall scoring. He only played 23 minor league games this season before being recalled to the Ducks because of an injury to Teemu Selanne, and he has proceeded to score 4 goals and 1 assist in his first 5 NHL games. Sexton has exhibited excellent puck handling skills and pinpoint accuracy on passes and shots. He is fast, gritty, and has good hockey instincts.
Because of Anaheim's lack of an AHL affiliate, Sexton had to play the first 18 games of his pro career this season in Bakersfield of the ECHL, scoring 26 points on 13 goals and 13 assists. He was assigned to Manitoba of the AHL on November 24, and scored 3 points in 5 games before being recalled to Anaheim on December 4, one night after Teemu Selanned suffered a broken hand. His ECHL stats still ranked him 5th in overall scoring and tied for 2nd in goals scored at the time of his recall to Anaheim.
David McNab has found another undrafted gem, adding to the likes of Chris Kunitz, Andy McDonald, Ryan Shannon, and Dustin Penner. |
