A number of former AHL Cincinnati Mighty Ducks rank among the NHL league leaders in many statistical categories:

- Ilya Bryzgalov has become one of the top goalies in the NHL. He currently ranks first in shutouts (5), second in goals-against average (2.02), tied for third in wins (21) and is fourth in save percentage (.926).

- Zenon Konopka leads the NHL in penalty minutes (137), major penalties (15) and misconducts (4).

- Dustin Penner is tied for eighth in the NHL in goals (19) and ranks 16th in points (38).

- Ryan Getzlaf is tied for fifth in assists (31) and ninth in scoring (41 points).

- Corey Perry is tied for 12th in scoring (40 points) and tied for 15th in goals (16).

Why do we hold the "EX-Player in the NHL thing in such high regard? It seems alot of folks think this is something special but I think differently. Multiple times I have watched a Carolina game wearing my Clone jersey looking for Erik Cole to somehow wink, smile, wave...anything. Heck he just skated by most of the time. The one time he did stop next to us was to dig a puck out during warm-ups. We rode up to Cleveland one year with the fan club, Erik sat beside us,he was injured and man was he was fun to talk too. My guess most NHLers could careless where they play their minors. I just don't see any current NHLers taking the time to acknowlege fans from their minor league teams...maybe someone has a different experience

As for ex-duck NHLers, I would expect there to be some, considering the AHL is tops in minor pro leagues....hopefully this isn't earth shattering for most folks.

In just a short time reading this forum it seems everyone could hardly contain themselves when David Desharnais played in the NHL, but if it was someone from those damn AHL ducks played it's all "who cares."

It's neat to see some guys who once played in Cincy doing well or make it to the NHL, regardless of who they played for.

Probably since the AHL is a big step from the NHL. Going from the ECHL to the NHL is a completely different story.

in spite of this post being placed in the correct section of the forum, this is a message board create for cyclones fans and many cyclones fans never followed any of the ducks players, hence the "who cares" attitude.

i'm not intending to to start an argument. i agree that anytime a player who did time locally makes it, especially a guy like penner, who was undrafted and not only made it with his size as grinder, but has excelled and is putting up points as well. but to draw a comparison between players like getzlaf or perry and desharnais is silly. getzlaf and perry are supposed to succeed where desharnais is fighting an uphill battle to prove himself. i'm sorry i can't get excited when a player who is supposed to succeed does.

most people like the underdog. that's the difference between a guy, drafted or not, that starts in the echl rather than the ahl. a guy that gets drafted and immediately plays in the ahl is practically expected to make the nhl at some point, if he doesn't he's considered a bust. a player like desharnais has a lot going against him; he's small and he went undrafted. going undrafted is a stigma that is hard to overcome for players of any size. david sees the ice well, moves his feet incredibly well, feels pressure allowing him to avoid many big hits, he isn't afraid to use what little size he has and his work ethic is impeccable. david is incredibly likable and for anyone who met him he's a hard guy not like and root for. are these things going to put him in the nhl tomorrow? no, of course not. he's has to improve in order to make it and stick and he's not ready yet. david is humble and he'd probably be the first to tell you this.

i'm not taking anything away from any of the former ducks, they are all talented and experiencing success, but to add a little perspective:

bryzgalov - 2nd rd pick 44th overall. played in 199 ahl games before becoming an nhl regular. most of the time goalies take some time to develop so the ahl time is no surprise. bryzgalov has found a second life in phoenix.

konopka - undrafted. played in 91 echl games, 350 ahl games and 75 nhl games. i liked the guy when he was with columbus. never paid much attention to him before or after his time in the columbus organization. he's a grinder that adds a lot of energy and grit to the line up but he's a career ahl/nhl player; this season being the first in which he hasn't logged any ahl minutes.

penner - they guy is a standout player. undrafted with incredible size and has proven to have a finishing touch. only played in 134 ahl games before sticking in the nhl.

getzlaf - 1st round pick 19th overall. as would be expected of such a player he only played 17 regular season ahl games before sticking in the nhl. he's having an outstanding season for sure.

perry - 1st round pick 28th overall. like getzlaf he is expected to play in the nhl and only spent 19 regular season games in the ahl before becoming an nhl regular. he is also having a great year. but it's so a certain extent expected of players like he and getzlaf.

i am in no way saying that david desharnais is the next martin st. louis (david has a long way to go) but the minor league numbers are interesting comparison as far as smallish undrafted players go.

st. louis played in 151 aa level hockey games before becoming an nhl regular. desharnais has logged 105 ahl games to this point. david continues to excel despite critics who first have said he would never be able to duplicate his junior numbers at the pro level which he did posting 106pts in 68 echl games, then the following year averages .75 pts per game which is hardly struggling. this season he's averaging 1.17 pts per game though 17 games. he missed quite some time due to injury and has come back into the line up and hasn't missed a beat. david is just a talented likable guy that is hard not to route for.

i would love to see david succeed and prove the critics wrong, i'm also willing to concede that with the stigmas of being small and undrafted, he may never get the chance to truly prove himself at the next level. his critics will continue to find something negative to say about him regardless. as stated earlier, first it was "he'll never produce the same numbers as a pro." when he did it became "well he'll be invisible in the ahl, let alone ever play a game in the nhl." and now that he's producing in the ahl and has played an nhl game (regadless of the reason, and i will concede it was due to injuries) it has become "well he'll never be an nhl regular." and i expect that should he ever become a regular the critics will say "well that team is terrible and that's why he's there and he'll never win a stanely cup." and should he win the stanely cup they'll say "well he'll never make the hall of fame."

sorry for the mega post. all stats taken from hockeydb.com as of 12/26/2009.

This board is called Section 60.com. There hasn't been a Section 60 at a Cyclones game since 1997. Section 60 is a seating area at the Cincinnati Gardens. Therefore, this message board could be viewed as being created for fans of that particular seating section. If this were strictly a Cyclones message board, there would be no "Hockey Talk - General Chatter" section. And certain people wouldn't be permitted to post or be mentioned on this board. In other words, it would be Cincy Sports.

If Cyclones fans don't care about former Cincy Ducks in the NHL, they always have the option of not reading or responding to posts on the subject.

no donnie, by all means continue to post. like i said it's in the right section of the board so knock yourself out. this was in response to gordon's questioning of why many people on this board (mainly cyclones fans) have a "who cares" attitude in regards to former ducks players.

I'm flattered that you think I have that much hockey knowledge. But no, I make my own posts. But thank you anyway, hrc.

my error i should have paid attention to who posted. i was honestly not intending to insinuate that you and donnie are one in the same. mistakes happen.

interestingly enough however, while what you say about the website referring to the section at the gardens is true the section60 home page makes it perfectly clear that it is in support of the cyclones and not of any other team:

"Who/What is Section 60? Section 60 (also referred to as The CycWard), all started back in 1990 with the newly formed ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones hockey team. At that time, the Cyclones home was the Cincinnati Gardens. A group of hockey fans sitting in "Section 60" (at the home-ice end) began supporting the team by yelling out various "cheers" and performing various "antics".

Today, the Cyclones play at the USBank Arena downtown, and you still find "The CycWard - Section 60" still located behind the home-ice goal (in Section 140). "

also the header reads "The CycWard-Section 60" cycward referring to the cyclones.

therefore my argument regarding the site being created by a cyclones fan for cyclones fans still stands; although i commend you on your redirect attempt.

there is indeed a section on this board for general hockey chatter so feel free to use it.

Wow. Somebody on this board actually gets it.

Thank you elvis77 for your clarification of the purpose of this board and your kind invitation to use the general hockey chatter section.

Much like your assessment of Desharnais' critics, there are those on this board who will constantly take every post lauding the accomplishments of former Cincinnati Mighty Ducks as a bash to the Cyclones. Some people just can't take facts for being simple facts, and will always find a Cyclones bash in any pro-Ducks post. They don't read or comprehend all the words, sometimes even adding words and attitudes that weren't actually there, and since they have already predetermined which screen names are associated with supposed Cyclones haters, anything posted by said supposed haters will be taken with venom and fury, and will never be read for what they are, mostly simple facts and opinions that do not reflect any negativity toward their beloved team.

I apologize for calling you hrc. Your class in handling this situation proves beyond a doubt that there's no way anyone should mistake the two of you.
