Poorly kept secret is now public.
Charlotte will become Carolina's AHL affiliate, and I'm now hearing that Richmond is going to sign on to the ECHL and become their ECHL affiliate and that news could come public of this fairly soon.
This leaves the Albany market in a lurch, though there may already be something in the works for the Rangers to put their ECHL affiliate in Albany instead, or perhaps even their AHL affiliate there because there have been rumors relating to the Islanders trying to move to Hartford and giving up on Project Lighthouse on the Island. |

Before the Checkers owner passes along the increase in costs from operating a team in the ECHL to the AHL on to the fans, he might want to have a chat with former ECHL Greensboro/AHL Carolina Monarchs owner Bill Black and get some insight as to how that worked out when the Monarchs did that in 1995.
In addition to the annual affiliation fee the Checkers will have to pay the Hurricanes ($1 million plus), the travel bill is going to go up substantially. The closest AHL city is Norfolk. They're going to be faced with the same travel cost issues Greensboro had when that city had the AHL.
Carolina has drafted well in recent years, so Checkers fans should have a young, fast, exciting team to watch next season. |
