I can't believe there's not a thread about this game already. That was one of the most exciting hockey games I've ever witnessed. Both teams gave 110% tonight but the Americans had a little bit more in the end. The Canadians swallowed a bitter pill by losing to the U.S. on home ice. Will they rebound and get to the Gold medal game or will they flame out from here?

Quite amazing that the Americans could possibly be seeded #1 when the knockout round begins. GO USA!!!

It would be amazing if it were 30 years ago, but it's 2010, a time when many of the best players in the world are Americans, including goaltender Ryan Miller.

I couldn't disagree more.
No. Its not 1980 and people need to stop making that comparison. That truly was a situation akin to the Miami Redhawks beating the San Jose Sharks... In a playoff game. Sadly, we'll never see anything like that again.

BUT

Team USA was completely outgunned by Canada everywhere except in goal. Sure, team USA are NHL players, but they ARE NOT the caliber players in terms of skill an experience that Team Canada has. Its not even close.

People keep saying Canada didn't work hard in that game. I disagree. I think they are just SO good that they make it look easy. That, and comparitively USA worked harder.

And at the end of the day, thats what it was all about. USA needed a stellar effort in goal and in work ethic to win that game and thats what they did. So they won.

Could they do it again?
I dunno. It'll be hard. But I have my fingers crossed.

Ryan Miller was the difference. Both he and Tim Thomas have been struggling this season and that's a big reason the US Team was picked to finish 4th. If Miller has found his game the US Team has to be considered a favorite for Gold.

The most amazing part is, either Russia or Canada will not medal. Canada gets Germany tonight and the winner will move on to play Russia in the quarterfinals.

USA is the better TEAM, Canada has more talent. Burke built his team with appropriate role players (Drury, Callahan on PK for example). Team Canada doesn't have a true grind line or PK specialists. Lots of scoring power, but not all the components required to be a complete team.

Until the medals are awarded, I'm just going to enjoy the games like I enjoy going to Clones games. If your team works hard and opportunity knocks, a team can pull something wonderful off. Go USA! Good luck, Canada!

In 1980, Lou Nanne asked Herb Brooks what he was thinking after he cut one of the best players in college hockey from the team. Brooks replied, "I'm not looking for the best players, Lou. I'm looking for the right players."

And I think THATS the key to this US team. We went away from the big names and most popular players and got guys that are role players.

Langenbrunner was a great choice for the C as well, and he showed why on the first shift Sunday night.

I first saw the quote in an issue of The Hockey News after Team USA won the Gold medal in 1980. I had the opportunity to meet Herb Brooks in the mid 1990's when he was scouting for Pittsburgh. He was an interesting guy to talk to.

Considering that the US's fate is during Friday's game, where would you recommend watching the game? (No home replies please, since I can't get NBC for free)

I am sure if you went to any sports bar they would put on the game. I know that the Willie's in Mason always puts on a hockey game if we ask.

USA is like sharks on a feeding frenzy. 90% of the first 15 minutes was played in the Fin zone.

They have backed off a little and now the Fin's are getting some scoring chances. I'd like to see them crank it back up to 11 again.

6-0. Start of 2nd period.
